Hi All;

Can anyone tell me if the Radeon HD 5000 series (5670 to be exact) video card supports DD Live? I've been searching everywhere for this info with no success. I'm in the process of building an HTPC and would like to use this particular card, and I'm fairly confident that if it's supported on other 5000 series cards it will be supported on this one as well.

Cheers,

It's a video card, not a sounds card... it has HDMI so you can bitstream to your receiver or just use PCM, but I've never heard any mention of it supporting DD Live.

Taken from the manufacturer's page:
Integrated HD audio controller

* Output protected high bit rate 7.1 channel surround sound over HDMI with no additional cables required
* Supports AC-3, AAC, Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio formats

Hi Guys;

Thank you for the quick responses!

I realize that video cards with integrated audio and HDMI connectivity have just started to pick up steam but if the mfgs are marketing some of these cards to the HT crowd shouldn't full audio specs provided? I could assume since this card supports "AC-3, AAC, Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio formats" that it will also have DD Live as well, but I don't like to assume because...:D

Thanks again guys

If you're bitstreaming out to a receiver, I'd assume it can decode trueHD and DTS master audio. So why on earth would you want to use DD live? Are you looking to encode from a non 5.1 source source?

But like it says it only supports AC-3, AAC, Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio formats.

Hey Shock;

Thanks for the response.

No my receiver will not decode trueHD and DTS master audio. I have some old DD 2.0 movies as well as some home movies that I want to have converted to DD 5.1 on the fly. The main reason though is that I use WMA Pro !0 mulitchannel audio files and it gives me the option of playing them through the "WMA Pro 9" decoder on my receiver or sending them as a DD 5.1 stream. Which imho is a nice option to have. I have this ability on my present computer and I really like it and if possible I want to stick with it.:)

Hi all;

I've decided to scrap the video card route and just go with a motherboard that supports DD Live, which I have found. Even this route has been a difficult search as DD Live is only an option on Realtek's alc889 according to its' site and not even available on it's new 892 that I could find.

Please indulge me in a rant.

I cannot believe that more people aren't complaining about the lack of basic specifications (audio or video) that are available for referencing, comparison or otherwise for motherboards,audio and/or video cards. I'm new to the custom build arena and for the past 3 weeks researching the various components has been truly frustrating, and I have had the benefit of this forum (s) and other forums as well as knowledgeable people I know to help me along. Imho, I think forums like this need to be more vocal and complain louder so that perhaps manufacturers and resellers etc., get the idea and start providing this basic information.

Thank you,

Wouldn't Dolby ProLogic II and all that matrix sound stuff be equivalent to DD Live?

This is just the nature of building multimedia PCs. The hardware manufacturers cannot determine what software you are using, which determines the capabilities of the output....just the nature of things....there is also a lot of licensing involved......I would thing dd live would be supported as it is a subset of dd truehd, but idk if decoding is supported.

Imho, no, there's a definite difference in sound quality and also in my situation using WMA Pro 10 mulitichannel files (768kbps, 48/24, 7.1 CBR), they do not stream well wirelessly from my NAS to our other 3 AV setups, yet when I stream the same file with DD Live they work perfectly.

While I think there's probably some truth in what you've said, for home electronics specifically, you can usually find specifications or at least they'll include a blurb saying "X capable or X enabled" and they're licenced up the wazoo :eek:
