Onkyo HT-S5300 7.1 but showing as 5.1

Hello,

I recently purchased an Onkyo HT-S5300 receiver and associated speakers. The system is a 7.1 home theatre in a box. I set up the speakers relatively easily but I can't seem to get the back 2 speakers (back surr) to produce anything...static...noise...anything. I know that those 2 speakers make the system a 7.1 and without them it is only a 5.1 setup. In saying that, the display reading on the receiver shows it to be in Dolby digital 5.1 format. How can I change it to 7.1 so that those back 2 speakers are used. During movie watching, I change the listening mode to the PL II as it produces the best sound.

I have tried googling and everything short of calling Onkyo but it seems that Google only wants to sell me an Onkyo and doesn't want to answer my question :(.

Anybody know if there is a button I am missing or something that would switch this to a 7.1 system? I should mention that on the first night the 2 speakers did work and I must have pressed something to change it to 5.1 while messing with the buttons. Onkyo has the worst instruction booklets.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Hello, Onkyogirl, and Welcome to the Forum. Love your screen name, BTW!

As for your hookup, did you do any setting up of the speakers inside the receiver's setup menu? Forgive me if you indicated that you had; what you would need to do is go under the receiver's SETUP MENU, and begin assigning speaker arrangements for your setup -- for example, there is a menu under SPEAKER SETUP which allows you to indicate whether or not you're using the back surround channels, and this may be your problem. If your AVR isn't "being told" that those channels are there, the two extra channels in the back surround configuration won't work -- so first, go into your setup menu and double check you've set the receiver up for 7.1 and then let us know what happened.

Unless your engaging PL2x and most tracks are 5.1, you will not get 7.1. If you are using bluray with a 7.1 track and with the HD codcs you will get 7.1. DD or DTS needs to be processed to get 7.1.

Are you the one with all that Onkyo gear in a stack in your system, and pics of Star Trek on your TV? :D

Audyssey would also tell her which speakers are hooked up, which aren't, etc. based on what she's connected.

But doesn't she have to program the receiver first to "tell it" which speakers are connected, i.e. 5.1 or 7.1, in the setup menu?

^ she stated that all 7 worked at 1 point.
Oh, okay -- going back and re-reading the initial post, I see where she said at the end that it had been working through all seven channels. That does indeed mean that it's something that was tinkered with post-setup...

That narrows down the problem a bit. Still, I think she should double check the setup menu parameters, just to be sure...

I think though, unfortunately, this may be a case of a brand new member joining and disappearing just as quickly which you see so much of on many forums.

We're hijacking this thread and didn't we already discuss this earlier?

My apologies; I think we did -- I didn't mean to hijack the thread, it's just that "Onkyogirl" never returned, and I didn't expect any return, so I figured it was okay to discuss something unrelated.
