hi!

i haven't been paying attention with the model changes now ...

i need a cheap display for my living room

1k or less from amazon, 6ave, etc. (shipping w/in US included)

what's the best or biggest display i can get? (panasonic, sony?, samsung?)

thanks in advance!

p.s. or i could get a bigger display for myself and move one of my 40" displays for the living room (not exceeding 1800 bucks)

42" G10 is $644, free shipping at the zon now.

There is the 50" G25 at your budget, sold thru something called Forest, and that pops up even when I hit Prime, but I don't trust it cuz it's not thru zon direct.

Therefore (mind you Im only looking at zon) I'd choose between these two:
http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-TC-P50S2-50-Inch-1080p-Plasma/dp/B0036VO7WM/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1284530563&sr=1-2

http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-VIERA-TC-P46G25-46-Inch-Plasma/dp/B00392146A/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1284530563&sr=1-3

I'm having a hard time having the search function there work for me with the other option of getting the $1800 display. So I look at Cleveland:

Under budget:
https://clevelandplasma.com/store/plasma_tv_s/panasonic/panasonic_tc_p58s2

But I recommend blowing budget a few hundred here (24p/96hz, THX mode, much better calibration flexibility, etc, and PLEASE make sure to defeat defaulted NR settings for most pic modes outside of THX):

Contact Robert to see what he can do for you:

That's a start I guess. I give a big vote for the V10 at $350 over budget. Dunno. Whaddya think?

much appreciated :)

i'm kinda leaning towards your first link ... (cheapest)

since the cleveland prices would seriously eat my current hobby fund (photography) i'm trying to convince my brother who's a super miser. (oh and those have 100USD shipping on top)

i don't suppose a wall mount bracket i have for a 40" LCD (got it free) would work for the 50" S2?

also, is Robert on the up and up? :)
edit: i would guess so ... pm'ed him to join this thread

also, i don't understand how wall mounts work when most HDMI cables shoot straight out, wouldn't that bump into the wall?

You're welcome mike.

I really have no idea, but model number, or brand, or picture, or something can help someone else help you. I've never owned a flat panel in my life ever.

Get a port saver adapter if the cables are already installed, like these:

looks like i'll be doing the 50 S2 ...

are plasma's especially sensitive to reflections from windows and stuff? (i've never had a plasma, only LCD's)

mike c thanks for inviting me over. Plasma will give you a better nigh time experience, whereas LCD or LCD w/LED dimming can stand up better to high ambient light conditions. Since most TV viewing is at night or with the window treatment drawn plasma should be the first choice for most folks.

In most cases plasma costs less and has deeper blacks, better color accuracy, better color saturation and better motion resolution. Plasmas have excellent off axes viewing and LCDs' image drops off significantly when viewing off angle.

If you can stretch to $2k then consider Panasonic's plasma 50" VT25. for the main TV in the house and move the TV that's there to another room.

Best,

-Robert

Sorry for missing this mike. AFAIK, it's not so much about plasma vs lcd, as it is specific model vs specific model.

For instance the VT25 that Robert suggests will be better with reflections than many LCDs, or so I've been led to believe. Not necessarily better than the best AR of the best LCD, but say better than many others.

What I need to find out for you is if the S2 uses the same AR filter as the VT series. BRB . . . searching . . . wait why am I searching, Robert will know. But I'll search anyways . . .

Ok, S2 has a better AR than C2 or U2.

Ok, G20 has a better AR filter than S2, besides THX as well.

I don't know if the VT25 has a better AR than G20.

I hand you off to Robert. :p

what's AR?

those VT25's are quite expensive (for the living room)
i'm hesitating changing my bedroom panel because i can only fit a 40"'er there (it's already a 40) + bookshelf speakers

if i went any bigger, the speakers would have to go

I believe it stands for Anti-Reflective (filter). I think*.

Mike, it’s hard to say about your mount not knowing make/model. You'd have to check the weight from the manufacture, but they tend to accommodate a wide range. Monoprice has a nice selection for under $40, so you’re not out much if it doesn't work.

Most HDMI have enough flexibility that you can bend them down to make it fit. Plus the TVs have the connections indented a few inches to give you more room.

I recently got a flat mount with my new TV instead of the tilt type because I never used the tilt on the old one. Well another unspoken advantage of the tilt is they stick the TV out a little further than the flat mount. This gives you better access to the TV and gives it a little better ventilation.
So anyway I ended up screwing some 2x4 furrowing stripes (my made up term) to the studs to bump the bracket out a little. I’ll try and remember to post a pic later.

Cheers,
Chunkydark

i have been looking at the monoprice brackets ... should i even consider the tilt or tilt-swivel types or just get the low profile brackets + port saver.

do people actually use the tilt and swivel types?

Congrats on your purchases, I use a monoprice tilting wall mount for my 58" samsung plasma and it works really well. I'm sure you will enjoy your new panny very much.

I've got the monoprice tilt/swivel mount. It's just excellent. My TV looks like it's floating in the air to people that see it.

Agreed, those mounts are pretty nice and flexible for so freakin cheap.

I bought one for my old 42" panny pro that I ended up schleppin off to work. The I needed the screen to mount in the corner so that bracket worked excellent and I could pull it out and adjust the angle until perfect.
