Hello all,

I recently bought a Coby - 5.1-Channel Home Theater Speaker System from bestbuy.com. my questions is do I need a receiver to go through my tv, and my xbox; if so could someone please direct me to something affordable to a college kid.

thanks in advance!

Two questions, two answers, sorta

1) Probably not, but don't expect sound better than a small clock radio, at best.

2) Define "affordable".

affordable as in, between hopefully 50-80 or so. I am not working yet, but that is probably my range for now to play with

Maybe eBay or craigslist. for the set of speakers you have your not going to need anything powerful at at all. Also for the price range don't expect to get hdmi or any of the other latest and greatest inputs. Best thing to look for is Dolby Digital decoding and as well as DTS, other than that you might be able to find something that is about 5 years old or so.

May you borrow some money from mom and dad? If not I recommend a part-time job.

If you have the option to return the Coby, I'd do it.

I would then start searching for a used receiver and a pair of speakers. A decent stereo will sound better than one of the cheapest home theater in a box systems.
