Hey,

I would like a tiny minimalist cd player for my home setup that has a digital out, i am only interested in using my own dac, so i don't care about the built in dac....

... i can't seem to find a minimal, tiny, component cd player with digital out.

anyone know of one?

thanks,

r

If you're looking for just a small CD player I'd look at the Teac PD-H300mkIII.

It is very small, has an optical output, and looks nice as well.

I was going to suggest the eastern electric mini max vac. tube player, until i saw you plan to use your own dac.Its even smaller than the Teac.

The Teac is certainly smaller than that. Look at the disc tray size if it helps to compare.

This dealer is selling a refurb Teac PD-H300mkIII single disc player for $99.95

A similar unit, also a refurb, in champaign finish. It's an older version, but I think it looks nicer. I also believe the older version is made in Korea vs. the newer version which is made in China.

That Teac is a nice looking little CD player. I don't have a need for one just yet, but if I ever do I'll certainly keep that in mind.

Seth,
Do you happen to know what the two RCA inputs labeled 'remote control' are used for? I'm guessing it's a control scheme like Onkyo's RI used to link other Teac components together.

Yes, it's a control scheme. Virtually all of the Teac Reference seperates have it. And it's exactly how you're thinking it to. Instead of the individual IR sensors receiving a signal it only relays it to the receiver. In order to use the feature you have to switch the bypass switch, which is near the remote inputs.

Since they don't make those tiny Teacs anymore, you can easilyfind a tiny DVD player that suits your needs, and fairly inexpensive to boot.

I believe Seth means to locate one used, which shouldn't be too difficult. I do like the looks of it. I have a small mini system that looks like that and I still use it after 15 years.

I agree however, any cheap DVD player should work fine as a transport and they can be found extremely cheap all over the place. Skim yard sales and craigslist in your area.

The PD-H300mkIII was discontinued very recently. It's still available new starting around $160. The Orangechimp is a refurb, which is pretty much as good as new.

The mini components are still alive and well. The replacement model is PD-H380. There is also a matching integrated amplifier, receiver, and I believe a tuner as well.

In this hobby, you'll find that most people want something that looks nice as well as performs nicely. I'm not saying a DVD player can't perform well, but to my knowledge there's no such DVD player that has the form factor, finish, and operation of the PD-H300 other than similar offerings from Teac. The differences can also come down to quickness of operation. Most small DVD players are slow and I've always felt that they've lacked in appearance and quality.

Just to illustrate my point, where are you going to find a DVD player that is not only compact like the PD-H300 but will also have a large, easy to read, florescent display?

The only info I can find on the PD-H380 (and it's siblings) seems to indicate it's only available in the UK.

They just introduced the line, and Europe is without a doubt their biggest market. Maybe we'll see them enter the market in the States soon.

Its true. I'm using an old Panny DVD player of mine for CD purposes and its butt ugly. Its also silver and everything else in my rack is black. Boo. It was already paid for though.
