SA-WVS350 hum troubles

Hi everyone

Sorry for flogging what must be the newbies dead horse, but here goes. I'm an absolute novice at this stuff and have looked around the internet (and previous posts) for something about this but have found nothing.

I recently acquired a 7.1 set of Sony speakers and a SA-WVS350 sub-woofer. In short, when I turn on the sub-woofer, regardless of whether it is attached to the amplifer, powered by a powerboard with several other appliances attached to it or plugged its own powerpoint, the subwoofer hums/buzzes for 5-10 minutes. The hum/buzz gradually reduces until it disappears completely and the sub-woofer seems to work fine (if it's plugged in). This happened the first time I used it and happens every time I turn it on. I can almost get rid of the hum/buzz if I switch the "phase" switch to the alternate setting and turn the bass boost and level dials down but, obviously, that defeats the purpose of having it.

I suspect I'm doing damage to the sub-woofer and it's amazingly inconvenient wanting to use it but having to wait 10 minutes for the noise to go away. Does anyone have any suggestions for why this could be happening and/or anything I could do to stop it? I guess the simplest solution is contact Sony or go back to the shop. I just hoped some people who actually know what they're talking about might be able to help.

Sounds like something is wrong with and/or is dying in the amp in the sub.

Pound on the cabinet. If you hear any odd noises, crackling, popping or anything like that, you have a bad or loose component. Wiggle the plug in the wall outlet, too. If it goes away, the wires and/or outlet may be loose. Bad connection to neutral is an easy way to make bad noises.

The amp needs service. Why don't you remove the amp and get it serviced? The shop does not need the cabinet or woofer driver.

you didn't say how you acquired this sub, but if it is no longer under warranty is it really worth fixing? you could probably slap a $59 plate amp on it and be ahead of the game.

Might be a stupid question, but have you tried to plug it into a different outlet in the room? Like one across where the rest of the things are plugged in? What city are you located in?

The AC outlet will have nothing to do with this. There are no active electronics in a turntable and the plug should always be two pin. Turntables ground via what they connect to always.
