BASH 500 or Dayton HPSA 500?

I'm mulling over my next DIY subwoofer project. I figure it'll be a pair of ported enclosures, using the Dayton RSS315HF. I'm just wondering which amps to go with. I see that the Dayton incorporates a parametric equalizer (single point), but are there any other characteristics that I should be aware of? "Real" power output", reliability, etc.

I'm also considering an EP2000, but I'm leaning towards plate amps.

I won't be starting this for several months yet, because SWMBO wants me to renovate the rec room first. But, in the meantime, if I can settle on the components I'll be using, I'll keep my eyes open for any good deals that might come along.

Craig is using the HPSA in his upcoming 18" subs and apparently they are pretty decent. Since the HPSAs are new, they don't have a lot of users out there yet AFAIK. I was thinking about getting one of the rack mount versions for my Tempest before I ordered the Epik.

The problem with the pro amp is basically the only adjustment you have on them is gain, so a plate amp is a better choice in my book.

The bash 500 is available from a Canadian retailer...don't know if it's a cheaper alternative to what is available stateside but IMO a good price.

Yeah, I've been at that website. Can$229 from CS, or US$200 from PE - the real difference will be in the shipping cost, I would imagine.

There close enough in price, that I'd go with whichever is judged to be better. The Dayton is US$200 as well.

This http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_info.php?t=2&products_id=500 is the same amp, claiming 1300 watts at a better price. Keiga is the OEM.

Yeah shipping and brookerage fees could balance out the final cost if buying from PE! Have you considerd any of those kits? They look mighty appealing for someone who is handy, much like yourself...just a thought.

Which kits? From PE or CS? I was planning on building the enclosures myself. I like those Dayton drivers and I can also get them at Solen.ca, where they are Can$173, vice US$138 at PE. I checked shipping cost for 2 drivers and 2 amps from PE, and with brokerage = $135! That was the cheapest method! I guess it's because it would be a fairly heavy package.

Crunching all the numbers tells me that it's pretty much a toss-up as to which source would be cheaper.

From CS...you'll still need to build the cab's. I just thought that Trio12 kit looked interesting for the price. I'm sure this build will be outstanding judging from your in-ceiling build.. BTW...thanks for that Solen.ca link.

The only commercial plate amp I'd suggest is the O Audio 500 watt bash amp. Beyond that get a pro-amp. Heck with the prices on Crown amps atm get one of those.

I considered the Trio12 as an option as well. TLS modeled the Trio as well as the Dayton. The graphs for the Dayton looked better, so that's why I'm leaning that way.

The price of the Trio kit is quite reasonable, but I'm willing to shell out a bit more cash for a bit more performance.

What is it you like about the O-Audio amp? It appears to have similar features to the HPSA500.

I noticed your link to ZZSounds for the crown amps. They won't ship to NS, because of the weight.

It lacks a variable high pass filter which is the biggest selling point of the O-Audio amp. Being in Canada may make things tougher. I'm not familiar with the places up there to buy amps. Maybe there is someone up there that sells stuff.

I have mine in a 2 cu ft sealed cabinet. If I recall, a ported cabinet for that driver would have to be much larger. What are your plans?

Yeah, a ported enclosure would be in the neighbourhood of 5 cu ft, IIRC. It would be managable though. I plan on building two, probably based on the layout of the Kappa box.
