So, they're re-releasing Avatar with additional footage in theaters this month.

... in IMAX/3D again, of course.

OK, it was a fun movie, and they already released several versions of DVD and Blu-Rays already, but isn't this a bit much?

IMNSHO, this is a new low in trying to suck more $$ without really adding anything of real value.

And all within a year...

Next up: new DVD/Blu-Ray releases? I wonder if they'll be out before the one year anniversary...

I never made it to see Avatar in the theaters, so if it came back I'd be ok with it, since it's the only 3D movie I actually want to see in the theater. But I still don't think it's something they should do.

I'll be there to see it.

They will be releasing the special edition Blu-ray around Nov or Dec, which will have even more footage and commentaries.

I can't wait.

I MIGHT go see it. I saw it twice in the theaters, so I would only go again if the extra footage was something really substantial.

How will you know if it's substantial unless you go see it?

I'm going to see it with Jeff. Afterwards we're going out in the woods where he can start mowing trees down with machine guns and flame throwers but I'm going to stop him with wet towel strikes. :D

I didn't see it in theaters. After seeing it on BD, I am not sure I need to, especially not for $15+ a ticket. Yes, someone please let us know if it is like one of those director's cuts that ends up being 10 extra minutes, 6 of which are in the credits.

The only movie I ahve seen that had substantial extra minutes added that really added more to the story was another James Cameron movie called "Aliens" I saw the original version more times than I care to count, then the directors version came out and they added like 12 minutes to the movie and it was those 12 minutes that answered so many questions in my head. (like why Ripley took such a liking to Newt and why the aliens had to go through the roof and not the tunnels), so I am curious as to what Cameron deleted this time around so that he could add his directors version.

The movie is too stupid for me to want to sit through again, but is a demo worthy bluray for certain scenes.

Looks like a version with an additional 16 minutes will be included:

In an interview to promote the "special edition" re-release of Avatar, director James Cameron revealed that not only will the upcoming Collector's Edition Blu-ray include this extended version, but also a more expanded, "alternate reality version" of the film that is a full 16 minutes longer than the original.

The new footage in the Special Edition includes a scene focusing on the death of one major Na'vi character, and a hunt for one of Pandora's creatures in a "rousing action-adventure, pulse-pounding kind of scene," said Cameron.

I could have done with 16 minutes LESS :) I guess it really depends on the quality of what was added. In the case of LOTR EEs, most of the stuff added was beneficial (or missing in the theatrical cut) so I liked it, even if it made Return of the King almost 4 hours

The other problem is, it will be impossible to unload the first release because practically every person on earth owns a copy...

The point of making films is to make money, and the Avatards will be sure to part with more of it for any new piece of crap that is added to it.

If they had wanted to give people something good, they would have made a greatly different film in the first place. But it would seem that people want simplistic crap, since that is what most people go to see, and therefore makes the big money.

If you object to them adding footage, I suggest you not go see it, or buy it when it comes out on BD and DVD. But you will not stop others from spending their money on it, no matter what you think of it or the people who want to see it.

"Real value" is something that is a fairly alien concept to Hollywood, so you ought not expect it of their productions.

I'm gonna go see it now, just to piss you off. I guess I'm an "Avatard" since I liked it.

You are going to have to do something else if you really want to piss me off. I know that many thousands of people are going to go see the new footage, and buy the new release on BD and DVD that will inevitably follow, and the makers of the film will make some more money. That is why they are doing it. They will succeed. I will lose no sleep over this.
