Hey guys Im really just entering the audio world and dont know much about any of it other then what ive seen at big box stores...

I impulsively purchased a set of fluence av-htb 5.1 speakers a few weeks ago. So far I think i like the speakers but after reading on all these high end speakers im wishing i would have went with something a little better..but owell i'll upgrade later im sure.

So now I need a sub and Im hoping this is going to pull my system together, mostly this system will be used for home theater but some music. The room is 15x20 sunk in family room so maybe 3' is under ground and the floor is a slab. This is my first sub so im a little hesitant to drop 500+ on one but thats y im here to c if thats what i need to or should do.

So i guess my questions are should i go with a "beginner" sub for maybe 100-300 buck just to get my feet wet or just break the bank on something high end?

Also can I over do a sub? Like get something thats to much for my speakers? Is there a particular sub that would match well with these speakers?

O and my receiver is a pioneer vsx-820, another bit of a impulsive buy...

Any help will b greatly appreciated

Never throw good money at a "sub-par" sub. Save your money until you can afford the one you need.

Ok thats kinda what i was feeling, can you recommend some subs for my set up?

Would the svs pb 10 be a good starter? or should i look into the pb12? Is there any advantage to the cylinder models? Thanks for the quick reply

It's best to call SVS or email them and tell them the size of your room. They will not try to over-sale you, they are good guys.

Yes, there are advantages to cylinder models:

http://www.svsound.com/questions-faqs.cfm#cylinderorbox

But there are also disadvantages, as, for example, it is more difficult to make a multi-woofer cylinder than a multi-woofer box (though that is not relevant to the models you are considering).

Also, I don't think you should be looking for a "good starter"; you should look for one that will do all that you need it to do, as buying one and then upgrading tends to cost you extra money. It is best to save up and buy one that does what one needs from the start. The SVS PB10-NSD may be all you need, in which case, it would be the best buy for you. But if it is not all you need, then it would be better to buy a higher model now. You might want to contact SVS and discuss your room size and listening preferences, and they might be able to help you decide what will be good enough. If money were not an issue, I would suggest just buying a couple of the top of the line subwoofers and be done with it, as having more capability than you need only is a problem of cost, as they will sound fine putting out less than the maximum of which they are capable. (So if you make a mistake on deciding what you need, it is better to buy one higher than you need than to buy one lower than you need. But you must also keep in mind what you can actually afford, and how much it is worth it to you to have really good bass.)

Any reason you can't build your own? You can get a lot more sub for the buck if you DIY.

For the same cost of a PB10, I would much rather get a Hsu VTF2, while it's on sale. Also look at the subwoofers from Elemental Designs, there are some fairly powerful, inexpensive subs there.

:) Well I made a impulsive move today and pulled the trigger on a klipch sw-450, I know it wasn't the best route but I was listening to it at a local store n liked it n the dude told me $325 out the door brand new with a cable so I bit.
This is my first sub so naturally I love it but knowing there's so much more out there makes me curious. So can someone tell me how much more of a sub is a comparable 10" say svs or Hsu? Is it twice the sub? Can this question even b answred?I have found a few high end audio shops but there a bit far from where I live so it'll b a while b4 I can make it out to them to hear other subs.. Thanks again for the help guys..

The reason that people probably haven't answered your latest question after two days is that even though you were given great advice, you went ahead and made an impulse purchase that negated everything else. Did you call the companies listed and talk to them about your requirements? Regardless, you have the subwoofer now. Who cares if the other subs are better than this one. Just enjoy it.

If I had to stay with a lower price amount, I would have chosen the Bic F12 sub that goes down a little deeper for less money.
