Just got the Panasonic and its my first venture into HD. I have a Yamaha HTR-5890 from a few years ago and it does not have any HDMI inputs/outputs.

Heres how I was going to connect it all and I just want to make sure I have it OK.

From my HD PVR I will run one HDMI cable to the Panny and a digital optical audio cable to the Yamaha CBL/SAT optical input. From the Blue Ray, I will run the HDMI into the Panny and another digital optical cable into the Yamaha DVD optical input.

The rest of the speaker hook ups etc remain as it was when it was an anologue hook up.

Do I have it and thats the best way to go?

Thanks!!

This would work, however you could just plug in both HD-PVR and BluRay into TV with hdmi cables and use TV's digital sound out to connect back to receiver.

Highly rec to get good universal remote as you'd or your family wont be able to operate it :)

If you missing any cables get them cheap from monoprice.com

AFICT, very few, if any, will "pass through" multi-channel audio to their digital outputs. Unless the audio comes from it's internal ATSC tuner, many are converted to two-channel.

I'd recommend still connecting the sources to the TV via HDMI, and run a separate digital audio connection to the receiver.

Use the TV to select video and the receiver to select the audio.

One benefit from this hookup is that you won't NEED the receiver to watch/listen to the source if you don't mind it's internal speakers. Just turn the TV's volume all the way down when you want to use the receiver.

markw, I am sorry but i dont understand your first paragraph. I would obviously want 5.1 sound so can I achieve this with your recommended setup below with 2 HDMI's into the TV and One optical cable out? That was recommended by both you guys so I will go that route

Boredsysadmin, thanks fr the same advice. what is a good universal remote?

Bandphan, sorry for the double post but I wasnt getting anywhere else with that one and I am setting up the system tonight

So.... i can use the TV to select CBL or DVD for the video and the Yamaha just to select the same? This is how I did it before when I had the components analogue set up. When I had the DVD hooked up with the component cables and the audio directly into the back of the Yamaha I did get 5.1 sound. Sounds like your recommendations achieve this but with one less cable

Thanks again

No. I'll try this one more time.

You can feed 5.1 INTO the TV via HDMI but when it comes out of the TV's digital out, odds are it'll only be stereo.

Now, with that ob-stackle* hopefully cleared up, re-read my post.

markw, ok so if i read this right (this time) i should run seperate audio digital cables both from the cable box and the bluray into the yamaha as i was originally going to do rather than a single cable out of the tv to the yamaha and that this will give me 5.1 when available from both sources ie cable and bluray?

thanks
