It's Cool, but it's OUTRAGEOUS!

"Nothing much wrong here. Actually, there is."

A little truth in advertising goes a long way. It may not help your bottom line, but the world will thank you for it when all is said and done. So you might ask yourself, "why would anyone spend $300 on a fan?" I guess if you must have that modern deco look in your home and you've already got the Dyson sweeper with the roller ball this gadget would fit right in. Keeping up with the Joneses is important regardless of the economic climate.

For those interested in a quiet fan with a small footprint then take a look at tower fans like this Lasko 2510.

At a street price of around $50 the Lasko tower fan is not obstructive or noisy. It does virtually everything the Dyson does minus looking like it belongs on the set of Lost in Space and the infinitely variable speed adjustment.

I don't know anything about that fan but if it is like any other Dyson products they are far overpriced. For the high premium you pay for Dyson vacuums the build quality is cheap and they don't perform any better than much cheaper alternatives. Actually, according to consumer reports every year, Dyson rates pretty low for price/performance and overall performance.

Dyson products are more of a gimmick IMO that is based on a lot of advertising hype. I suspect this fan to be very similar.

I really like my dyson vacuum :(

I can't recall the exact model number but I think it's a DC18. It works great.

I have a couple lasko tower fans and heaters. The heater only works on high - on low, the fan doesn't work and it overheats and shuts down. On one of the fans, the buttons randomly don't work. The other fan works great though.

I haven't researched this fan, but my suspicion is that it's similar to an "anti-gravity" device that showed up on Mythbusters a while back. They built theirs out of aluminum foil, wire, and maybe a little balsa wood, and when a current was applied to the device it hovered by inducing airflow and creating thrust. This appears to be doing much the same thing.

Sure, it gets rid of that noisy air impeller, but before one declares air impellers to be worthless it's worth recalling why we've used them for so long. Prop fans are simple and effective, although they can't handle much static pressure (a weakness that I wouldn't be surprised if this device also had). There are lots of other fan types, many of them quieter than prop fans, that can efficiently move air. I'd love to be able to have a completely quiet fan with no rotating parts for some of the projects I design, but if this thing works the way I think it does, it strikes me mostly as a novelty.

I'm sure your Dyson vacuum works great but so does a lot of vacuums at 1/4 to 1/2 the price of the Dyson. Its the premium price payed that is tacked onto to them that I think is unjustified from both a build quality and performance standpoint.

I saw the Dyson fans on display and stood in front of one to experience the flow of unchopped air. Unfortunately, there was still plenty of buffeting as it passed over my ear (it was on a high setting) - so I remain deprived. :(

Well, my dad is the one who bought it for me, so I'm sure he only paid 1/4 to 1/2 the regular sale price :D

There's nothing too magically about it. It passes a thin controlled stream of air across the airfoil (ring) via a slit which creates a low pressure zone, which in turn sucks more air through the ring amplifying the airflow and voila you've got a fan! It is pretty cool, but I won't be buying one at $300+.

I don't trust everything Consumer reports tells me. ;) If I recall correctly they test all the vacuums with a brand new clean bag / filter etc, not after they've been used for a year (or whatever). So, out of the box the Dyson might not have the best suction of all the vacuums they test, but it's not going to lose any suction either while the other ones do.

And, I wouldn't pay $400 for a Dyson either. Both of mine were about $200 each. :p

I have seen that Dyson fan thing on display at Best Buy. Talk about NOISE. It is LOUD! It also does not move much air. As far as I can tell, it simply has a fan in the base that forces air into the circle and out small holes at a high rate of speed which makes much more noise than normal fan blades.

According to Dyson's marketing their vacuums don't lose suction over time. ;)

It uses an impeller.

They certainly do.:D

There are several other sweepers from competing companies that claim this as well, and they almost always cost significantly less. I can attest to the build quality of Dyson sweepers, and it is far from excellent. They have as much likelyhood of having some mechanical problem as the rest of the budget sweeper brands like Hoover and anything else you can find at Wal-Mart. Rainbow and Kirby sweepers are built significantly better, however Kirbys weigh a ton. I've always been a big fan of the Rainbow vacuum cleaners.

It uses an impeller.

So they paired a centrifugal fan (and a rather goofy-looking one with a plastic impeller) with a really inefficient diffuser? That's just silly. I'd also be curious to see what a "2D impeller" looks like...

This thing actually works very well surprisingly. Too bad it costs a grip! It comes in 2 sizes too....and the LITTLE one costs $300 for what amounts to a desk fan. There was a review of it on Gizmodo not too long ago and their tag line was "An answer to a question nobody knew they needed answered."
