I'll admit I'm being lazy and not looking it up at the moment but...

How big of a deal is the HDMI 1.3a vs 1.4? What does version 1.4 get me? 3D?

I'm rocking a Yamaha RX-V2500 (no HDMI) at the moment and want to step up and get something new that will get me the new HD sound formats...I'm not sure about 3D. I don't think I'll get a 3D TV but I might want to future proof the receiver somewhat.

Thoughts?

Don't worry about it STRONG. Yes, it's mainly for the 3D's video bandwidth. I believe even as of just this year already, there are three Panasonic players on the table that all have dual HDMI outputs. Why the two HDMI outputs? One to go to your pre-existing receiver (audio only), and the other for your display. Google DMP-BDT100, 300, 350, etc.

I understand all of the headaches out there, but in defense of whatever asses design these things, HDMI has worked just fine for audio from the very beginning at version 1.0 (just no bitstreaming yet, but PCM is just fine like from a phat PS3). Also, DTS-MA was cool, even though it took a while for components to be able to decode it, because even non-HDMI receiver owners were still getting a big increase in bitrate.

^That all said, IMHO, that receiver is not an excellent deal. It's about three years old. But, then again, if it floats yer boat . . .

EDIT: ok, not sure about the 100, but both the 300/350 are listed with dual HDMI outputs:
