Anything better than this for $500 ?
http://www.epiksubwoofers.com/legend.html

Epik Legend dual 12's sealed in a box with 300 RMS amp.

DIY is out of the question, I'd like a finished commercially bought subwoofer.

This sub won't hit the market til the end of august or beginning of september. I'm in no rush, and it looks impressive especially considering the 15" version has gotten pretty good initial reviews.
Just wondering if there is something else I should be looking at for around that price.

Thanks,
Jethro

They aren't available yet. If you can't wait you may want to consider an SVSounds PB12-NSD but without knowing room size it's hard to even guess what you need.

The PB-12 is $600. It is impossible to say if the Legend will be as good as the Empire because basically nobody has heard it yet and without some feedback on them, we can't really compare it to subs that are available and well reviewed right now. Since you aren't in a hurry, I'd wait for some reviews and performance numbers to come out about the Legend and decide then. My guess is, it will be worth the wait.

I know that power is just a number and it depends on the efficiency of the drivers and cabinet, blah, blah, blah.... but a 300 watt amp for dual 12's in a sealed enclosure does make me scratch my head a bit.

Like a great many things audio, this is a subject of much confusion, by many. Rather than do a whole bunch of redundant typing, I'll just link you here , where not only is the subject explained, but there is a spreadsheet where you can enter values and see for yourself.

cheers,

AJ

Thanks, I figure the drivers are just uber efficient. Looking at the big uncle with the 15"s using a 600 watt amp made me wonder.

That is a screaming deal, just not what I'm looking for. I'm only going to end up having the space for a single sub, and I can see myself wanting a pair of them bad oscars. I have a few subs right now that I'm going to try out in the room once the room is finished to see "how much" I'm actually going to need to pressurize the area.

I'm going to test out my a2-300, a5-350, and a3-300 from eD. I've got a klipsch 15 incher and a mirage 12 incher as well. I just want to try a different ID company besides eD out for my next purchase. I'm thinking I'll roll the dice on that epik and pre-order it...

I just still can't wrap my arms around the fact that the 15" empire uses a 600 Watt amp for dual drivers, and the dual 12" legend uses a 300. I would think that the drivers would be similar in quality and sensitivity etc... anyhow, I'll get over it.
