I missed that. Perhaps it also serves a purpose of having something precious in hand, like The Ring in LOTR, but that would seem a bit contrived all by itself. I suppose with my idea, and your statement, combined with the fact that the last thing in the movie we see is his/her totem . . . providing that
Limbo moment at the end of the movie . . .
After I first posted my complaint about the totem, it did dawn on me that it plays the critical tool in providing limbo for the audience, at the finish. I guess I don't like that.
Remember the scene with the "Escher" stairs? I am wondering if that's what the story is supposed to imply. I thought about the opening scene, with Saito . . . he was already aged . . . interesting eh, as if there was a hint of some mobius loop . . . but I don't see a closed loop here . . . yet . . .
