Lo and behold after an entire week of almost non-stop unpacking, we forgot about 3-4 boxes in a shed we have outside, all full of garden supplies. We go through them, first one pots, second one pots, third one pots and a weird face thing that hangs on the wall and looks like one of those statue faces from easter island. Fourth one, what do we find but an entire home theater system! My dad says he got it probably 4-5 years ago, used it very little and forgot about it, moved, and left it in storage for the entire time.

So now I have a nice base to work with, and I can concentrate my money on bettering this system, if it is what I think it is.

It is a Panasonic DVD Home Theater Sound System.
The model # is SC-HT700.

I am sure you will be able to find ample info on what it is online.

Would you be able to actual explain to me what I have, is that receiver or main thing whatever a two channel system?

Is this a system that I can easily upgrade, lets say if I wanted to add better speakers, or maybe even sub and start switching it up?

If it is, what would be your first suggestion for an addition to this system?

So happy that this was found you don't even know!

Talk about descending from the top of the mountain to the deep valley!

I'm sorry to have to burst your bubble, but that unit is a very low end unit that comes from the dawn of the video digital age.

It is likely an older unit than you think and right at the bottom of the food chain. It cost $349.95 new. It had to provide a preamp, DVD player five amplifiers, five speakers and a powered sub. I have to be straight with you, you can only do that and produce absolute junk at the same time wasting precious raw materials.

Since that unit was produced things have moved on.

To use it you will likely have to use an older TV. It requires the TV to send its sound via analog audio. A lot of TVs no longer have that. Some have a digital optical out which you could use. That unit has one optical input, which is its only digital connection.

It is really designed to also work with the old VCRs.

It has a built in DVD/CD player. It has one auxiliary analog connection.

To get video to the TV from the DVD player it has one composite video connection or an S-video connection. This latter connection is largely obsolete now.

It does have a set of component video outputs, which is the highest grade of analog connection and the only one that can pass an HD signal. However DVD is not an HD medium, and that unit can not accept or pass a high definition signal.

What I would do it but the best pair of speakers you can afford, and start by connecting them to that unit and use it as a stereo unit. The speakers with that unit will be terrible. Then save for a modern digital AV receiver with HDMI connectivity.

The add a good sub and the other speakers. You can add a BD player as funds permit.

Well to be honest I have a 1080p computer screen and do all my bluray watching off my computer so I not worried about that, unless its some sort of nature documentary I don't care about hd, I am a happy camper with DVDs for now.

Now, my dad hasn't run off with those B&O Speakers yet, since i have this now is there any way I can set those up with this sound system now? All the speakers plug into the sub woofer through normal speaker wire, is there any way I can get a cinch to speaker wire type cable or something, or would I still need a preamp?

As for speakers, if I just get a good pair of 2 speakers that connect with speaker wire into the sub woofer?

Also, if I get a new receiver, wouldn't that mean my current subwoofer won't plug into it since it's got some sort of special plug?

Always doing things over my head, I am at least glad to have sound now , although it might not be the best. :)
