Dolby D/DTS Queries

Hi All,

I have recently bought an Onkyo HT-R380 amp and have a few newbie questions re listening modes. Any feedback would be greatly welcome.

1) Whats the better/difference between DTS TruHD & HD Master?

2) My BluRay player is connected by HDMI and set to output audiophile but I only seem to recieve DTS HD Master - is DTS TruHD & HD Master output determined by the Blu Ray film itself?

3) My V+Hd box is connected via HDMI and set to HDMI override on. With normal TV I only ever rhave the option of PLII or NEO6 Cinema. With HD films I purchase from Virgin FilmFlex I only recieve Dolby D 5.1 - not DTS etc. Can I get DTS with normal TV programs & films that output in DTS to work and if so, how?

All of my amp settings are pretty much set to default.

Can anyone provide any feedback on the above?

Many thanks

well this is pretty confusingly written but i will say one thing, your not going to get DTS from cable. as far as the HD codecs, someone else will have to answer this, i don't know very much about them.

Hi All,

There are sort of two questions there. I won't go into differences, because they won't really matter to you, but as for which is better, none are: They are the same in quality (assuming the master is identical). They are both "lossless", which means . . . if neither codec loses anything, then they are both "perfect".

2) My BluRay player is connected by HDMI and set to output audiophile but I only seem to recieve DTS HD Master - is DTS TruHD & HD Master output determined by the Blu Ray film itself?
Yes. With many movies, you actually have to choose the codec in the menu before the film begins. With DTS MA, usually there might not even be a menu, as it's not necessary with how that codec is designed.

TrueHD is from Dolby, so don't call it "DTS TruHD".
