Congrats on the new phone, looks to be a nice phone albeit a bit large...

Motorola seems to be making a nice comeback from the days of their cheap throw aways... I hope they continue to keep up the good work.
Battery life was a huge concern for me on these new products.
Seems the incredible is horrible for battery and that scared me off....

krzywica is your best mate to get things dialed in on the Droid....

I picked up a Iphone4, as I needed something pretty quick and didn't have time to wait around for new products, and battery life takes me into 3 days.... very happy with it at least until these new droids pan out a bit more...

Good luck with your fun new toy...

I need to see if she has updated her's, I have a feeling she hasn't.
Yeah my girl has the Eris as well and its vastly inferior to the Droid, the latest OS version for her is going to be 2.1, but when I updated my girls phone to it she started having some strange issues.....

Yeah going with Apple is always a good option because if you have issues with the product they have awesome customer service....no sarcasm there.....:p

yeah, can't say i'm a huge fanboy - its a tool for me and it works great - as I rarely roam around the country so I don't worry about signal all that much.... Here in my area I don't have any problems with signal and the complaints At&t seems to get...

so far so good with the iphone, never had an issue with that antenna thing, and I think its a bit overhyped, but as stated its a good phone and works.

I would have preferred to move over to the droid platform, but I think they are still a bit early - so many people love them, the GUI/OS but it seems the hardware is hit and miss.... Krzywica and Nuance both have the original droid and they love it....

Agreed. Most of the things in the media about the iphone are overhyped. I know a few people with iphone 4's and I'm the only one with the grip of death problem. Its not a huge deal though because I put cases on everything I own anyways. I was looking at the android phones, but there were none that really got my interest. Eventually I'll be getting a droid of some sort, but I'm a little leery of how much power Google is getting :p

The Droid X looks to be a real nice phone. If I was with Verizon, I'd have one.

Since I am with Sprint, I got an HTC Evo 4g (I had the Palm Pre before). Love the phone. I think these larger screens are going to get more and more popular (Dell has a 5" screen phone due out soon). The new Samsungs coming out now look promising as well.

I was also a bit worried about having only a touchscreen for input, but I have adapted fine. Also, I started using Swype, and that has made input even better/faster.

I love what the iPhone has done for the industry, the Android movement is going to push that further, but I still tell people that the Blackberry is the best phone if you are primarily messaging/emailing.

I actually prefer a touch keyboard over hard keys now that I am used to it. I am used to the smaller screen of the Dare though so it is kinda weird repositioning fingers to work with the larger keyboard, but I am very happy with the response the screen has. I haven't started using Swype yet since I just got the phone yesterday. When I went in, they said the Droid is better because it has the slide out keyboard and I told her I don't like it. So she said to wait for the X since it was only a week. They also had issues getting the Incredible so the X was actually easier to get and cost the same. They said I wouldn't get it until next week, but I got the shipping notice on Sat and it showed up yesterday. I agree, this thing is big, but you will probably see more and more phones going for bigger screens ala iPad.

How do you find the voice quality and what about how the people you call feel about it? Also, if you use the phone for extended periods, do you find it to get uncomfortably warm?

Not uncomfortably warm, but you can tell it heats up for sure - while I was getting it all setup and playing around with it. I haven't used it long enough to say how good call quality is overall, but incoming is good so far for me. It supposedly has some noise rejection so outgoing should be good, but I haven't asked others how it sounds.

What about Apple? The amount of pull/power Google has is infinitesimal to Apple.

How so? Google can probably access millions of peoples email accounts effortlessly. They also could have a history of everything searched too. And now, they have a huge amount of phones circulating the globe that could be recording data and sending it back to the mothership 24/7!!

Well that last part is a little too conspiracy theoryish, but the moral of the post is that corporations have too much power. But then if the government intervenes then people complain about them having too much power as well. So we're screwed either way!

IIRC, there was an article a while back about google and how they record every search by I.P. address or something like that. I'll see if I can dig it up.

EDIT- And dont forget about google earth. Someone has to go through that and censor things (like license plates), which means they have pictures of pretty much the entire globe.

You make plenty of valid points. Apple is definitely in the same boat. All their components are basically built in house. They have the same amount of control with their devices. Why does the iPhone take a screenshot of every application when it is closed? (search for that. It just came out regarding police forensics). The amount of information that our handheld devices store regarding our habits is mind boggling. I'm sure 99% of the population has no idea how much of the "personal" information can be accessed by someone in a control room somewhere in the world.

I don't think it's possible to say one corporation has vastly more control than any other corporation in today's world.

I got a new cell phone too. It's actually the first cell I've ever owned because I've never really felt the need to have one until now.

I've been studying the Android platform for awhile now and wanted to get an Android phone but until just recently AT&T didn't offer any Android phones and I wanted to stay with AT&T because most of my friends and family are on AT&T and free mobile to mobile is always good.

Their first offering, the HTC Aria, is pretty nice but it is rather small. The screen is only 3.2" and while that doesn't sound all that much smaller than the iPhone's 3.5" screen, in practice it is actually quite noticeable. So I passed on that one.

I got the Samsung Captivate (4" screen) on Monday and so far no problems other than initially I had a hard time setting up wi-fi. Sitting 3 feet away from my router and it would not connect or randomly gave me messages like 'unable to scan networks'. I did a factory reset and re-did the setup and now all is well.
