cheap netbook recommendation?

I'm considering getting one later this year. This will essentially be for browsing/email only. Not a media server, no gaming, etc. The one thing that I am concerned with is its capability in running REW, Audyssey, video calibrations, etc, for the future.

Do most netbooks have soundcards that are just fine for audio measurements, such as REW? Thanks.

I assume as long as there is a minimum level of RAM and processor power, that I am fine for other types of AV cals. Cheers.

My wife has an Asus and she's happy with it. It's easy to upgrade too as some of the netbooks make it difficult to upgrade the RAM. Lenovo makes a pretty decent netbook too. Netbooks are great for portability, but they really lack processing grunt. If you want something ultraportable and decently powerful, Alienware has something new.

Go to local Best Buy and check out their keyboards/touch-pad - since these are probably the only things differentiate one from other - most other specs same - get the one with keyboard type you like...

I have a dell mini 9 for a Hackintosh that I did...

I like it, it has a 64GB SSD drive with 2GB of RAM...

They have some newer models out now, also look into the used/referb section of Dell you can get a steal.

Thanks everyone, for the suggestions. I guess I don't have to worry about a proper soundcard that I can use for REW? Cheers.

Well, like I said all of them have pretty much same internal components, so sound cards wont dither as much b'weed the models. Imho anything with over 85 SNR and less than 1% thd should be fine, or you just may get phantom powered measurement mic and a digital (usb) mic preamp and your netbook's sound card wont even matter :)

Athlon Neo is somewhere in mid-road b'ween Atom and Pentium processors both in performance and battery life ...
I think for REW/Net/email Atom should be enough, plus the battery life if better - and less heat too

My suggestion is don't. Netbooks suck. Been there, done that. The screens are too low of resolution IMHO even for websurfing. Step up the 11.6" 1366x768 CULV based notebooks. Unlike the slug Atom processor the CULV based notebooks have Core 2 Duo processor that can actually do useful stuff while offering nearly the same battery life. I really like the Acer 1810T (4GB, SU7300, Win7 Home Premium) I ended up with after first buying a Samsung N120 netbook.

I agree, my kid was so happy when he first got his netbook (asus) and ten later on the passion faded....

Step up just a touch to a smaller form notebook and you will be much happier down the road

At first glance, it seems many places are out of stock on the Acer 1810T. It unfortunately is double the price I had in mind, which likely means I won't buy it. Hm. I understand one gets what they pay for, but . . . well, I'm open to more suggestions. Maybe there is an in-between model somewhere. Thanks all.

There is a 1810TZ, and a 1410 as well. Just be careful of the 1410, some are a Core Solo (SU3500), some are a single core Celeron 743, and some are a Core 2 Duo marked as a Celeron (SU2300).

For a while you could get the Celeron SU2300 (Core 2 Duo) 1410 variant for $400. Acer revamped the models quite a bit after rolling them out. Unfortunately the prices either went up, or the hardware got watered down and the price point stayed the same.

I bought my 1810T when they first came out. Ironically, for once buying early paid off. I paid less for it and got a better system than the 1810T refreshes that have come out since then.

If you have a staples close they have a cheap home theater laptop that would work. I use one for my main computer and it was around 500 bucks.

Pat, I'm lost and don't know how to begin. Will you please just choose one for me? I am happy with spending only $300ish, could maybe be talked into double (thanks to darned Stereodude), so maybe something in-between? Pick for me!

It took me the last couple of months to finally unsubscribe from EVERYTHING (I mean you-name-it), save one, and that is AH store. ;) So, I'd rather not go this route, if I don't have to. Thanks Pat.
