Transferring .wav files from PC to PS3

I've saved all my music to my PC using the the Windows Media Player 11, under the .wav format. I've finally gotten around to transferring the music to my PS3. But it doesn't sound quite right. Everything sounds just a bit harsh/shrill. I'm trying to figure out what's the issue. In the meantime, here are a couple questions:

1. When I copied the .wav files over from the PC to PS3, are the files saved in their original .wav format, or are they somehow converted to AAC or MP3 (thus degrading the quality)?

2. Instead of transferring the .wav files from the PC to the PS3, would there be any significant sound quality advantage to ripping the music to the PS3 directly from the original CDs?

Thanks in advance.

Venting: BTW, it was a PITA transferring the music over. Transferring through the mediaserver (WiFi) was so slow as to be impractical. The PS3 only recognizes FAT32 files, so I couldn't use any of my portable backup drives; instead I had to do eveything through a 4GB thumbdrive.

Why not just stream them from the computer to the PS3? Should be bit for bit the same thing and you are not storing the same music on two different devices.

It's too slow.

I've tried using the mediaserver feature, but it it's simply too slow. There is significant lag just finding the songs. Maybe this would change if I could go hardwired, but WiFi is my only option now.

Short answer no, if look at the track info it should say LPCM 16 Bit 2Ch.

To me the WAV format sounds better than ACC, MP3, and ATRAC the highest kbps for each is

ACC 320kbps
MP3 320kbps
ATRAC 352kbps

Ripping CD's using the PS3 is a bigger PITA IMO.
BTW what is output frequency setting on? and do you have Bitmapping engaged?

Family's using the TV now, so I can't check. But what's the best setting for music and/or movies? I have the PS3 connected via optical to a DD 7.1 receiver that can also do DTS.

This is an area that is subjective because it will depend upon your tastes, here are the options you have.

Output Frequency

48 kHz Sampling

44.1/88.2/176.4 Sampling

Bitmapping works when you are using the 2nd option of frequency sampling and here are the types.

Type 1: Use a technique called dithering to reduce noise or distortion produced during audio output.

Type 2: Use a technique called noise shaving to reduce noise in the audible range.

Type 3:Use a technique developed specifically for the PS3™ system to enhance audio playback.

So those are your choices which will require a little experimentation to find what sounds best to you.
