Hello All,

Lately I am reading a lot here. I am looking to upgrade my CD player (very old Onkyo - no blue ray).

Me and my wife we are 80% Music / audio and 20% movies. Occasional gaming. I have Yamaha 1065.

With my limited knowledge, is it safe to say that If we buy PS3, it can be a good player for all Audio / Video needs and will support all formats out there?

Please help.

thanks

The only thing the new slim PS 3 won't play are DVD-A's and SACD's.

But if you can pick up an older fat PS3, those ones will play anything. You're probably safe with either.

Thanks, and I also believe that PS3 will take care of netflix, pandora and all that online stuff.

Only the first gen PS3 with the 60GB HDD stock, and second generation PS3 with the 80GB model with play SACD. None of them handle DVD-Audio in MLP Lossless.

I'm late to the party, here are the models that will handle SACD

20GB (CECHB)
60GB (CECHA)
80GB (CECHE)

As Seth pointed out no PS3 will handle DVD-Audio in MPL Lossless, If SACD is something your looking for then one of these three models will do. GS sell these refurbished and here is what you will pay for them:

20GB $299
60GB $349
80GB $299

If you decide for the 80GB make sure it has 4 usb ports and not 2, the 2 usb port 80GB model will not support SACD. Amazon is also another good place to look for refurbs. If you really don't care about SACD get a 120GB Slim for $299.

I forgot the 20GB had SACD support. I've only ever seen one 20GB PS3, they are immediately noticeable because they don't have the silver or chrome trim.

20GB left, 60GB right

The 20GB never really took off it was overshadowed by the 60GB, since it was missing WiFi and if memory serves me HDMI as well.

I've had both the old 60G fat one and now have the new 120G slim and both of them make for a great blu-ray player. I also have netflix and had it for both models. The only thing is is you have netflix you have to request a cd from netflix to be able to use the netflix downloadable material just as u would watch it on your computer. It does do a good job for all kinds of media except for the stuff mentioned above.

It's worth noting that a PS3 is quite good at upsampling DVDs.

I have the 160gb and it doesn't play sacd.
It does upscale regular dvds very well though.
A good bang for the buck.
About the only thing it won't do is make waffles.:D

If disk space is an issue, its very easy to install a new HD into the ps3. I put a 600gig 2.5" in mine.

Just Google it, there is a threads out there with lists of appropriate HD's for the ps3 phat and slim.

I use the PS3 as the primary player in my theater, and as others mention it does a great job with standard DVD's as well. good sound quality to boot.......I barely use it for gaming (as I seem to lean toward the Xbox for online games)

still seems to be the best bang for buck in terms of blue ray players in my book.

I just bought the 120gb today at lunch. The fan on my 60gb is loud and gets on my nerves, I am giving it to my brother-in-law to go with the Denon 2310 I just got him.

He is out in the 104 degree heat redoing the wall around my flowerbed so I will call it "even".

Probably the Most Important Thing!!!

Guys,

You've made many valid and important points on which media types are supported by the various versions of the PS3. And some of the user upgrades possible with the console (a Hard Drive upgrade is easily accomplished by anyone with minimal experience with computers, will not void the warranty and is detailed in the PS3 manual).

But beyond that, the best thing that Sony does with the PS3 is they regularly update the software and/or firmware (almost monthly it seems). Often adding new features or improving existing ones. This is a huge benefit to someone looking for a seemingly "future proof" universal type player that meets the needs of most (97%?) consumers.

As was pointed out in earlier posts, unless you need SACD and DVD A support, the PS3 looks like a "no-brainer". Especially in these tough economic times. Now let's see, $2000 for a Denon DBP-4010UDCI or $299 for a PS3?

Which other $299 Blu-ray player supports WiFi and Gigabit Ethernet? Not that $2000 Denon! That's only the beginning. The PS3 was so far ahead of it's time (and the croud) it blazed the trail and made everyone else look bad doing it.
