I am looking for any music that can even come close to Pink Floyd as far as eerie intensity, mellowness, smoothness, spiritualizing influence, haunting beauty, weird, unique, and epic ... something to trip out or get stoned to.

Try Porcupine Tree; I've always thought of them as a modern day Floyd.

Fwiw...another band to consider is Radiohead...around these parts I've heard them often referred to as a modern day PF....but nothing really comes close IMO!

That unique style I don't think you can come even close too. It's the structure of their music that totally amazes me. There are many acid rock bands from the 70's that will send you into out of space. Is it progressive acid rock you're looking for? I've been on a few trips myself. Sometimes I wonder if I ever got back.

I like The Dark Third by Pure Reason Revolution. They have another album after this one called Amor Vincent Omnia which is also good, but doesnt have the same sound and feel to it.

Thanks for the heads-up on this band. When I heard people compare them to Depeche Mode, I thought "oh no" but I don't hear that at all. They sound more Progressive (light) to me and not as electronic as a Depeche Mode. I'd like more masculine backing vocals though. Just my thoughts. Actually, no vocals would be even better.
GO VCU!!!

When I read this, I was thinking about King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King.

Try the latest album from "Archive" - Controlling Crowds - I believe they're soon to be visiting the USA for the first time after an extensive tour of Europe.
Oddly, they're English, based in Paris, and are almost completely unknown in the UK ! Often talked about in "progressive" circles as being a kind of modern Pink Floyd, with a lot of keyboard content & their roots in trip-hop coming through quite frequently.

Such a thing does not exist.

Try 'STRAWBS' "Hero & Heroine" Album or CD. You may like other albums by them too. But, Hero & Heroine is thier best work.

Great album, I think it as their best. "Dust in the wind" was that Strawbs too or Kansas, I can't remember.

Dust In The Wind is by Kansas and the first cd I ever owned was The Best of Kansas. I remember hooking my new cd player to my Yorx piece of crap (on Xmas morning) and blasting Carry On with a huge grin on my face. My parents knew right away that the cd player was a big mistake as a gift. Dad was sure happy when I took all "that music" with me to college. He was a Country & Western fan through and through. Sometimes he came into my room and stared at my Ozzy poster from the Speak of the Devil tour. Then he would just shake his head and leave without saying a word. Zepplin was "ok" in his mind for some reason. That shocked me!

Oh, and of course if you want some rock bombast & extensive guitar & keyboard "noodling" then there's "Muse" of course !
Apparently they're the greatest live act in the world at the moment....

Big Pink Floyd fan here :)

The closest thing I have found is Porcupine Tree, they have a lot of instrumental stuff with real mellow moods.

Floyd can never be topped though, they define their own genre.

I'd second the suggestion for Radiohead, they are definitely their own band but incorporate some of the space rock elements of Pink Floyd and tackle some of the same lyrical themes, especially on OK Computer. However Kid A is probably their "trippiest" album.

Another band worth checking out is Catherine Wheel, their 1995 album Happy Days even features cover art by Storm Thorgerson.

And if you want something really out there try Sigur Ros, I wouldn't compare them to Pink Floyd so much, but they definitely fit the bill of epic and hauntingly beautiful. My favorite album by them is probably Takk.

Thom Yorke of Radiohead has a solo album out that is quite good also: Eraser. I am not a big fan of Sigur Ros, but some of their stuff is interesting.

Oh yeah The Eraser is great too but definitely much more on the electronic tip than Pink Floyd, or Radiohead for that matter.

Building off the earlier suggestion for King Crimson, I love the instrumental Fripp/Eno albums, they are amazing and remind me a bit of the Pink Floyd epics like Echoes. My two favorite Fripp/Eno albums are Evening Star and No Pussyfooting.

Sort of similar to Pink Floyd in terms of strange noises and epic sounding music:

Tool - Lateralus, Aenima
Dredg - El Cielo, Leitmotif
Oceansize - all of them especially Effloresce. Very epic sounding lots of instrumental portions
