Hello everyone, would like a little help in deciding which to purchase.
I will be using these for surround duties and multi channel music listening.
Isiberian graciously explained how to mod these speakers but I'm not skilled enough to do the bracing nor do I understand what the every axis point means:(.I will however peel and seal and rockwool these speakers.I've done the mods to some 20 year old fisher stv-756 speakers.(I have large paws and had a heck of a time getting my hands inside at times:eek:0.
Which speaker would benefit more from the mods?
BTW,my mains and center will be Infinty primus 362's.
Any and all help is welcomed and appreciated.
Regards,Len

In light of the MCM I think you should stick with Infinity. Personally I use the 152's in an identical set up without any Peel & Seal or additional sound absorption because they're just surrounds, I'm old, tired, lazy and sick of itching.

I guess if you have the extra room and money for the 162's ... well, go for it but I wouldn't trade my 152's for them based on some notion I have that the 152 might be a better sounding speaker. Who knows?

For MCM definitely go with Infinity, however ideal case for MCM is 5 identical speakers....
So another pair of 362's for surrounds would be the ideal case for MCM. Time to stretch the budget :)

I think the question also may be whether you want to see the drivers or you want grilles.

For surround duty I don't think modding will make a noticeable improvement in the sound. Even with m/c audio, the surrounds do the least work.

When the 150's and 160's first came out, the 150's got better reviews. I don't remember why.

I would stick with the Infinity's to match the center & mains though. The 162's should sound great.

Probably for the same reason why the Atoms always got better reviews than the Titans: less bass makes them sound cleaner even though they may not be.

The 150/152 is superior for mid-range/treble band. It has a more even far off axis characteristic and is overall flatter in response. Also, the smaller cabinet surface area produces less acoustic output and the smaller internal volume is less effected vs. the larger interior volume of the 160/162, as both have largely ineffective internal absorption material. It gives up efficiency and extension compared to the Primus 160/162. If a stereo sub setup is present, the 150/152 set would be the preferred choice; but optimal cross point is 100hz or even greater - as it has very limited dynamics if used at a lower frequency. So dual subs are needed for optimal integration.

Just a better balance?

Purchase whichever one meets your aesthetic needs for the lower price. There will be little (not no) difference as MCH surrounds. There is absolutely no reason to "modify" anything. Unless the "mods" can be demonstrated to physically change/improve the soudwaves impinging upon your ears, it is safe to summarily dismiss them as one of the great many psychological maladies that plague the susceptible...and affect what they "hear".

cheers,

AJ

I owned both for years and had plenty of opportunity to listen to them back to back. The Atoms did sound cleaner when played full range because they didn't have any bass; the midrange was the focus. With the Titans, they extended lower but if pushed with low material, they would sound a little "stressed" and the midrange would suffer somewhat. When crossed over however, the added extension gave the Titans a little more room to blend with the sub more cleanly IMO.

Wife says if I stretch the budget on entertainment system she stretches on the bathroom remodel budget(That can get really expensive:(;)).
Thank you for all your quick and informed responses.
I will go with the 152's per your recommendations.
Have a great and safe fourth of July!
Regards,Len
