Sub placement behind listening position?

Check the Hsu site. Hsu rates their subs by room size.
I don't think he needs to worry about that. He is sitting against a wall and right next to the sub, that is a great spot for efficient bass.

It's still nice to have enough sub to move enough air to pressurize the room.

Part of the goal is definitely to avoid having to upgrade as soon as I move into a house with a "real" living room. I don't want to have to go out and buy another sub as soon as I move out of townhouse living.

The problem is that when you move you may need more sub. It just depends on the size of the space. The little Hsu STF-2 could then become your bedroom sub. Or a SVS cylinder sub can become the first of 2 in the new living room. Just think though possible upgrade paths as you shop.

Is there even a remote possibility of my acquiring a sub that will prevent a future living room upgrade in the future within my budget?

Again, that depends on how big the room is, where you will be sitting in it, how much you are willing to spend, aesthetic considerations-like does it have to be small, or have a nice natural wood finish, etc. Given that the sub can not be large at the present time, I would say that it won't work alone for a larger room. Powerful subwoofers need larger cabinets. However, you could get one STF2 now, and when you move into a larger room, get another, that might do the trick. Multiple subs do more to evenly pressurize the room, which results in a overall smoother room response.

Keep thinking positive thoughts in my direction. My wife may be warming up to the idea of a cylinder sub. Am I right in thinking a cylinder from SVS would be more upgrade proof than the smaller STF2?

Yes, it will have a lot more output anyway, and be more proper for a larger room. One is good; two would be better!

Yes. Although as I said before the STF-2 could become a master bedroom sub once you move. But yes a SVSounds cylinder sub would probably be more satisfying in your current home and have a clean upgrade path by adding another in your new house when that time comes. Or you could stick the cylinder in the master in your new house.

you might try moving the couch away from the wall just a bit and going diy. Not sure what your price range is, but I had a similar problem. Here was my solution hometheatershack.com/forums/ported-subwoofer-build-projects/29867-looking-little-help-shack-2.html just add the www yourself, I can't post links yet.

A good suggestion, but with the size of my room and the amount of furniture, moving the couch would necessitate moving the love seat, which will throw off the primary listening/viewing position.

just keep in mind, the box I built is only 14" wide. If you use a 12, you can go slightly narrower.
