Great work by the US and we get an easy draw for a semifinal run. Though I think Uruguay are the favorites in the Semi draw the US has a chance to make it which is more than I expected. I see Argentina as the strongest team other than Brazil so far. South America could advance everyone which would be a boon for that continent.

I still think Germany are still one of the best teams and one of the best coached as well. I would not count out the Dutch either.

U.S. had moments of brilliance. It's a shame they couldn't maintain the focus they had at the start of the second half. Talent is there. Focus/concentration is not.

I kinda wanted to see Ghana win since they are the only African side left and they care much more about Football than us. Uruguay-Ghana could be a shootout for the ages.

Germany should dominate England, but things don't always go as they should.

Argentina will win their match.

A lot of hype about how Africa is cheering for Ghana but do they really care for them any more than Italians care that The Netherlands or Bolivians that Uruguay are still in the running?

Yes they do. Africans want an African side to win. They have a Unity that was largely caused by oppression. Not sure if you've had the fortune of visiting Africa before, but it's a magical place in many respects. Once you go to Africa they say you leave part of your heart there. I feel that even though it's been 6 years since I was on the continent. South Africa is still the greatest experience of my life. Nothing comes close.

Too bad it did go as it should. I am not really into football too much but hey its my countries team. I was still quite tempted to place a small bet that England would lose (I know thats not being very patriotic) as the German's have beaten practically everyone else.

Damn, why didn't I place that bet:confused:

Germany looked mighty powerful today. They are so calm and in control both offensively and even at times when the defense breaks down. No team is running off the ball quite like the Germans. Impressive (touch) passing to say the least. What a joy to watch, now this is soccer! Superbly coached and confident going into the next game. I would not want to be playing the Germans right now. :D

Ummm, I don't mean to nitpick, but shouldn't that be "The USA and Americans abroad react to Landon Donovan's goal against Algeria...." ?;)

Wait a minute, I understand now - it's like the "World" Series......:D

I've been quite impressed with Donovan's play, actually. And it's too bad they didn't advance further. But, like Isiberian, I kinda have a soft spot for the African teams.

Good luck to Ghana. It should be a good game against Uruguay.

Interesting stat that sticks in my mind is even though the U.S. is approximately 15 times larger than Ghana we can't field a team that routinely kicks arse. Unfortunate.

I'm really looking forward to the Argentina - Germany game. There is no way Badstuber can keep up with Messi so Germany is going to have to deploy some strategy here. I'm very interested in what the tactical approach will be for each team.

As well as the Netherlands game (whoever they end up playing either way it will be a good game).

No doubt Messi will be tough to defend for Germany. However if there is one weakness with Argentina that Germany can exploit is their defense. Germany is tough to defend since they move off the ball so well (the best I have seen in the world cup thus far) and it might cause some problems/mismatches. I like the Klose and Podolski matchup in their favour. Argentina has played pretty weak teams so far in the world cup and their defense has not been tested. I think the goal for Germany is to put pressure on them early in the game and strike quick and see how Argentina handles themselves when facing adversity. I also like the Germany's tacticals (coaching) very much.

Either way, these are two world class teams. Can't wait for the game. :D

Well I would say the defense is Argentina's weak point but only because their attack is so strong. I think they have a decent defense. IMO their keeper is the weakest point on the team. I have seen him in quite a few games including outside of the World Cup and he is not very good at all.

Argentina does have a very dominate attack. Here is a clip from Germany's coach Joachim Loew and the strategy they used against England.

(Reuters) - Germany coach Joachim Loew hailed his young team's "magnificent" display in a 4-1 World Cup second-round demolition of England on Sunday before explaining exactly how they targeted a suspect English rearguard.

"First of all, we've put on a magnificent display against a very experienced England side," a deadpan Loew told reporters.

"Today we were dominant, we were successful in luring John Terry out of defence with (Thomas) Mueller and (Lukas) Podolski penetrating the wide defence.

"It is a very young team and I am very proud that they coped with the pressure and kept the pressure on England," he added.

After an even start to the match, Germany's Miroslav Klose was gifted an opener after a sloppy England defence failed to deal with a long ball. It quickly got worse for England as the German front-three of Mueller, Klose and Podolski went to work.

England centre-backs John Terry and Matthew Upson failed to cope with Germany's pace or movement with Podolski adding a second before Mueller's second half brace.

Loew said that was all part of the plan. "We knew that the midfield is (Steven) Gerrard and (Frank) Lampard, who always support the forwards, and that their midfield would be open.

"So our objective was to set Terry up with Klose to force him to come out of the defence. We knew that the fullbacks would be very much to the sides and create spaces between the England defenders that would help us penetrate their defence.

"We wanted to do this and we were successful there," he explained.

MAJESTIC MUELLER

With opposing manager Fabio Capello standing in the background, head bowed and waiting to meet the press, Loew went on to praise the thorn in England's side -- man of the match Mueller.

"When it comes to the 18 yard box he is totally cool in hitting home when he has the opportunity. I really love the way he dives into that area and finishes chances off. This is quite impressive, he is only 20," Loew said.

England fans raised a cheer when Upson's first half header brought the score to 2-1 and they went crazy seconds later when a Lampard lob beat Germany keeper Manuel Neuer, hit the crossbar, bounced over the line -- only not to be given.

"I have to say this ball was across the line, so it should have been given as a goal," Loew said.

A business-like Loew quickly switched his attention to a pending quarter-final but played down talk of his side being tournament favourites.

"This is a tournament like any other. We, of course, can enjoy this victory but as of tomorrow we have to work hard again," he said before later shaking Capello's hand as he exited.
