The projector goes dark for a minute or so before recycling on. This can happen continuously or once or twice while watching a DVD. What would cause this?

How old is the bulb?

My friends 900 did this. A bulb change fixed it. I have also read that this could happen if the projector is overheating. have you checked the filter ?
