Installing Some Outdoor Speakers...

...but I'm not sure what Yamaha means by "weatherproof". They are NSAW150Bs and they were half-price, for $100 @ B.B. In the manual, there is are the following statements:

"Your speaker system has water-resistant enclosures that protect the speakers from the elements when mounted outdoors."

And:

"When installing these speakers outdoors, try to minimize their exposure to rain and snow by mounting the speakers in corners or under eaves."

What am I to take from these statements? That they can take a bit of moisture, but don't let them get hammered with a torrential downpour? I'm asking, because I will be mounting them on a gable-end wall, so they won't be protected by the eaves. Should I build little roofs over them? Or will rain not really hurt them. I plan to take them down during the winter months, so I'm not concerned about snow and ice.

I've ordered a Dayton IWS ABDS In-Wall Speaker/Source Switch and a VRS100 Impedance Matching Rotary Volume Control to connect the speakers to the system in my living room. I plan to incorporate the outdoor speakers with the kitchen in-ceiling speakers and mount the controls in the kitchen, near the door to my deck.

I don't expect jaw-dropping performance from these speakers, but they will suffice for background music while we're lounging on the deck, having a beer.

It seems like a pretty straight forward job, but if anybody knows of any hiccups I might encounter, please let me know...

In that case, (assuming they came with a "u" shaped mounting bracket) I'd mount them horizontally and angle them down to protect them as best you can.

EDIT: Now that I've taken a look at the picture of these, and can see the mounting bracket.I'd ignore what I said initially and mount them vertically.
They're designed to shed water better mounted that way.

Have you considered mounting them lower, so you could that them in after use?
When I had a deck in the back of the house, had speakers mounted on the railing, in the corners.
I'd only hook them up as needed, taking them in at night.

I have 2 sets of the 350s (larger version of the 150s) on my deck and near the pool. The ones on the deck are mounted under the eave, while the others are on the back of the house in the open.
I've had no issues with them in the 4-5 years I've been using them. I do take them down before winter.

I think they're pretty good speakers.

That's good to know. The thought of having to build little shelters for them is not appealing to me....

I removed it and went with the VRS100 volume control alone for now. That works fine, but it means I can't listen to the kitchen or deck speakers alone.

However, I talked to Parts Express customer service this morning and they are putting a new one in the mail today. If that works fine, I'll be a happy camper and happy with PE.

The Yamahas work fine and do the job asked of them.

I think I lost a couple of pounds of water in that hot attic though....

It's all relative you know. We do get summer here and for me, the attic was hot. For somebody from Houston, it might've been nice and comfy. I'll get in touch with you next time I have to do anything up there.

Put a big wad of silicone on the terminals, to keep them dry. It will peel off when you want to take them in.

You don't have 'Speaker umbrellas' in Canada?

I was wondering if I should cover the terminals. The chances might be slim, but I wondered about the possiblity of rain water shorting them out.

I assume you're pulling my leg about the "speaker umbrellas"....
