"PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Christan Morales says her son just wanted to honor American troops when he wore a hat to school decorated with an American flag and small plastic Army figures.

But the hat ran afoul of the district's no-weapons policy because the toy soldiers were carrying tiny weapons.

"His teacher called and said it wasn't appropriate because it had guns," Morales said."

I'm not sure I understand. Why does a picture of a leaf seem reasonable to ban, but a mock-up of a firearm is not?

because the toy was a mockup of something good and right.

the leaf is a mockup that sends the message that it was a norm:
fact: no it's not
it's also illegal
it's totally unnecessary
and i wouldn't want my kid to see that image
etc
etc

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Christan Morales said her son just wanted to honor American troops when he wore a hat to school decorated with an American flag and small plastic Army figures.

But the school banned the hat because it ran afoul of the district's zero-tolerance weapons policy. Why? The toy soldiers were carrying tiny guns.

"His teacher called and said it wasn't appropriate," Morales said.

Morales' 8-year-old son, David, had been assigned to make a hat for the day when his second-grade class would meet their pen pals from another school. She and her son came up with an idea to add patriotic decorations to a camouflage hat.
it's very black and white to me. quote from the article, text put in bold by me.

two words: school. minor.

you're very lucky to have kids that can make the right decisions for themselves. mine can't.

where does your kid study? do you have kids?

i'd like to visit them and tell them how harmless the leaf is, and how it's illegal nature is just the government being envious, etc. etc.
your genius child should see right through me.

war is 'good & right' ?

but smoking pot (it is decriminalized, and de facto legal in some places) in the privacy of your own home and not harming anyone is wrong? let alone an image of a leaf...

black & white? maybe to you...and maybe you're wrong...you are not the arbitrator of the lives of others...
who's to say what is necessary? 10k$ stereo's, 42" TV's, cell phones (it will be shown they cause brain cancer, much more dangeroeus than pot)

you better blind your child then, because if he WILL see things (this is good btw), and he better learn to deal with them...my job is to teach my kid, not isolate and shield him from reality...otherwise he will be ill prepared to deal with it...

War wasn't mentioned in the article chief.

Public tax payer funded schools have a few rules to abide by, and then kids get free educations. Not a bad deal.(for the kids)

"The district does not allow images of weapons or drugs on clothing."

lol. no wonder. you think the toy soldier is representative of war.

the toy soldier was a representative of your armed forces, defense of your land and all. (primary function of your armed forces?)

yes it is black and white.

oh i'll teach my kid. i also expect his school environment to not have symbols of stuff that are illegal paraded as the norm.

like i said, i'll bank on me convincing your kid to do pot vs. your "teaching him" any day.

you are also very welcome to smoke in your home, oh and make sure to include your kid in your session or teach him to just do it at home.
and about decriminalizing, then do it in those places, anywhere else, it's illegal. period.

oh and just for the record, yes, i've smoked pot.

what are soldiers and camo for nancy? parades?

a kid (8 yr old iirc) has been suspended for pointing his finger at a kid saying 'bang'
zero tolerance must apply to everything equally, can't pick and choose...

good thing the school doesn't have a zero tolerance policy, otherwise this kid might bave been arrested and expelled for posessing weapons.

I know that this guy is gone, but I can't let this one go.

This guy actually thinks that it was OK to suspend a kid for pointing his finger and saying bang? And that sinse this stupidity was OK that more stupidity should follow?

because the toy was a mockup of something good and right.
I can't find the emoticon for the sound I'm making :)

I worry that we get a little to far into the "intent" portion of what's appropriate... and I fear into the nuances we don't know.

I don't think the issue is the soldier, but the firearm (and soldiers outside of combat zones are rarely armed).

I think, perhaps, that it's simpler to simply ban weapons and mock-ups of weapons (which appears to be what they did). If that means that some kid that wants to show support for the troops has to avoid to weapons in his speech: I don't see that as a terribly high price to pay.

Not intending to sound difficult: but perhaps the kid with the pot leaf supports plants: which are good.

Alternately: Can he dress up like a soldier to express his support? When he does, can he bring his assault rifle?

I know that's a reducto-ad-abserdum, but I'm pretty sure you would oppose allowing that: and so the discussion does not seem to be, as you frame it, support of soldiers-vs-non-support: but whether there are limits in how you can express that support and what those limits should be... which is, I suppose, my point.

it's very black and white to me. quote from the article, text put in bold by me.

I think you misunderstand me: my actual position is that I support both bans.

where does your kid study? do you have kids?

your genius child should see right through me.
After we explain how harmless guns are?

I think I've failed to convey an accurate depiction of my point :(. I suppose if I have a theme in threads like this it's to point out that even people who think they view in black-and-white really do not... to try to align the reality of how someone thinks with their self-perception of that thought.
