Is there a better sight than the UPS man at your front door with a huge box?
Yesterday morning effectively ended 6 months without any frequency's bellow about 60Hz.
The DefTech subs get a bit of a bad rap on here because of their inflated specs. According to DefTech this sub goes down to 11Hz and puts out 1800watts. Umm 11Hz at what, 5dB? From what I have read, this sub performs at 18-120Hz +/-3db. Not bad.
At full Canadian retail of $2400 I would not have chosen this, but as it was I found a used one for $800 plus shipping. I figured I would take a chance, and I could resell it without a loss if I didn't like it.
First impressions:
100lbs in a largish box is a ***** to get up a flight of stairs on your own! It's kind of like if my girlfriend were to curl up in a ball and I'd have to carry her around.
After wrestling with it for 15 minutes I managed to get it out of the box and slide it over next to my TV, just to the right of my front left speaker. I turned the gain down and plugged 'er in. Switched all of the speakers to small, sub to YES and 0db, 80Hz Xover and we were off.
First order of business, a bit of music. I popped in my favourite Hannah Montana CD and turned it to my favourite track "the best of both worlds". Kidding. I turned on some satellite radio. Started off with some bass heavy southern rap. Played with the gain a bit to have everything blend nicely. Then I spent the next 15 minutes going between genres to make sure everything sounded good. A bit of Jazz, some rock and even some Electro.
I was absolutely amazed at how well this sub blended with my mains. I could not tell that there was a subwoofer plugged it. It just sounded like my RBH's were suddenly able to go really really low. Comparing it to a brief affair I had with a Klipsch RW-12d I can tell you that this thing is worlds apart. With the Klipsch I was constantly aware that there was a subwoofer. It drew a lot of attention to itself by mudding up the bass and producing a boomy, ugly sound. Not so with this thing. The sound is buttery smooth.
Next up. The opening scene to Lord of The Rings. A few minutes in and your taken straight to the battle field. I can say that I really FELT like I was on the battlefield. Troops getting hit produced a satisfying thud the chest. When Saoron gets destroyed the Supercube sent out a shock wave of bass that last's for a second or two. Very cool feeling which I only ever got at the movie theatre.
I capped the night of by watching "Up!", which actually uses a lot of LFE and was really a great film. Having the flying house smash off the rocks made my room tremble.
I'm really very happy with what I hear so far. I am going to be experimenting with placement this week and might move the crossover around and play with the phase. I think corner loaded and properly dialled in this sub will be amazing.
I thought having a good sub would satisfy me, and I could keep this for a few years and be happy with it. But I feel like I just got my first hit of crack. I want more. NOW! I just got it and I have the upgrade itch already. Jeez.
