West Coast Vacation Planning

I've needed to get away for a long time, so I've booked a flight and bought some concert tickets. The rest is just ideas.

I'm flying out on a Friday to land in LAX. Saturday I need to go to San Bernardino for the concert. Saturday night I'll drive back to LA somewhere to spend the night I suppose.

Sunday I plan to go to San Diego by car for a couple hours, then to Tiajuana for a couple hours, then back to LA late night wherever I was staying.

I'm thinking, if it's possible I'll catch Zs in the airport until about 6am Monday morning. Hop on a plane to Vegas, hop in a car Monday morning early to the Grand Canyon, park and hike to the Phantom Lodge at the bottom, spend the night.

Tuesday morning, hike back up, hop in the car, get back to Vegas and return the car. Spend Tuesday + Wednesday in Vegas, fly out of Vegas Wedneday night.

So far, the flights to LA and from Vegas home are booked. Couple questions for the west coast AHers:

1. Any good companies to rent cars from in LA? I'm looking for a sports car, manual if possible since I only drive stick.

2. Any good companies to rent the same kind of car in Vegas?

3. Any alternative ideas (cheaper flights, chopper) for getting from LA to Vegas? Flights I found are like $70, so no biggie, but if there's cheaper, I'm all for it.

Feel free to throw ideas at me. Looking to plan a trip with very little sitting still and a whole lot of ground covered.

Holy crap dude, you're gonna need a vacation from your vacation!!

But only a couple of hours in SD? You're nuts. You've gotta spend at least a day in Diego. I'd skip TJ unless there's something in particular you're going there to see. *cough* Donkey show *cough*

It's more a moving vacation. I'm going to see anything and everything. Tiajuana is the woman's idea. As long as I'm behind the wheel of something fast, I don't care where she wants to go. :)

use priceline.com name your price for car rentals - you can get amazing deals (yes, I hate William Shatner too)
make sure to bring you camera with you ;) No pics=no vacation

btw: Who's concert you got the tickets for?

p.s:
Zzz in the airport ???? With woman??? You are officially nuts

Dude, that's just nuts. Assuming I can't talk you out of this insane plan, how come you just don't go directly to SD after the concert? Yes, I think driving all the way the down there for two hours is very silly, and even more so for TJ. I don't recommend taking the time to hit TJ, tbh.

Forget the whole LA thing as your point of departure. You will kill too much time and money.

Can you go directly from SD/TJ to Vegas instead? I would consider just driving there too. Vegas traffic on Sunday is outgoing, not ingoing, usually. I don't think you would save a ton of time by flying, and the car gives you the most flexibility on when to leave and go. Don't lose time at more rental places than you have to either.

Oh, you've booked tix already, hm.

Good luck finding a sports car in manual for an affordable price. Either you pay for it, or you drive the POS automatic.

If in SD for only 2 hours, I'd spend it on the beach. Super hot chix too. However, who knows how much time you lose finding a spot, walking.

$70 for LA/Vegas is decent, I think. My travel addicted friend really likes this site, but he says you gotta spend all day pluggin info in, and if lucky, some magical figure will appear at some point. He hits all kinds of continents on a yearly basis, and he's landed some sick deals.

For the car, if you really care that much, you will have to call/contact every single one of those companies to see what they have, for whatever pricing. At least that's my impression, haven't rented much.

Yeah, they design airports to be near impossible to sleep in. I recommend Leight earplugs, a sleeping mask from Amazon.

Not sure about LA, but in Vegas you can rent Ferarris and Vipers :) I think that will work. Hertz has the Vette and most likely LAX will have them on hand compared to some other places.

Seriously, I have no life.
I would think about landing at Ontario or one of the other regional airports, to avoid the long lines and wasted time.

One way car rentals are murder. Rather spend that extra money on something better. I don't mind paying for the car, I'm probably going to go up to $250 a day. I'm taking sand to the beach (woman), so chix don't really matter. Thanks for the site, will be plugging away later!

ZHZ Vette, already looked into it. Availability was the problem, but I'll keep trying. Thanks!

NJ-LA and LV-NJ flights already booked. Everything else is up for planning.

Yes, I am officially nuts. It's what I do. :)

I really do like to do crazy things. I might skip the fast car, rent a $30/day beater, and just go to LVMS and pay for a couple hours in a Porsche 911 or Lambo LP560. Probably have more fun doing that than renting a fast car for normal streets... YES, that's what I'm gonna do!!! :D

If it were totally up to me, I'd be taking my paintball gear, playing a few fields out there, hit the racetrack for a whole day, fly a helicopter to the Canyon, and camp at the bottom.

I mean just rent once. Get car in LA, concert, down to SD, up to Vegas, Grand Canyon, back to LA. I just saved you over 10 hours maybe.

Driving from SD to Vegas directly will probably be about 2 to 3 faster than driving back up to LA, flying Vegas, renting another car. Hell, it might be 4 times faster.

$250 a day gets you a pretty nice car indeed.

LAX location:

Sports selection, looks like BMW Z4 starts at $169.

edit: btw, I won't be able to give you last minute advice, because we are swapping coasts you and I. Hitting NYC on Thursday for rehearsal dinner, wedding, etc, then on to France to meet up with family flying in on different days. First time in NYC in 15 yrs, first time in Europe 8 yrs, first time international in 7 years, first vacation over a week long in three years. Have fun!!

I'm going August 20th. :D

Well, here's what I think...

Land at LAX Friday, spend the day in LA, drive to San Bernardino, get a cheap place for the night.

Wake up Saturday, concert is basically all day, drive to San Diego, get a cheap place for the night.

Wake up Sunday, spend the day, drive to LA, leave the car. Now either:

1. One hour red eye to Vegas and get a cheap place for the night.
2. Get a cheap place for the night, early bird one hour to Vegas.

Monday morning, helicopter flight to canyon floor which includes dinner at the lodge and camping the night in a teepee.

Wake up Tuesday morning, chopper back, hit Vegas however by foot and cab, hang out, get a cheap place for the night.

Wake up Wednesday, hit Vegas till 8pm, head to the airport, fly home.

So far this is the plan I like most. I found out I can't do the racetrack that weekend so that plan is shot. :(

Just be prefer to the Vegas' month of August 115-120 degrees dry desert heat. Too hot even at night and in the early morning. It's cool if you soak yourself in the pool all day or stay inside the casino and gamble all day.

With certain pieces of info not given, I don't like the plan. But that's just me.

I think you should plan this down to the minute, and if not, at the very least, down to the hour.

So, what time can you arrive Friday? Name the exact hour. Then add another hour for baggage and rental. I suppose NY/LA is still cheap enough where doing layovers doesn't save enough to be worth it, so flight time not any longer than it has to be. Include 3 hr time change. I am reading that you will fly back directly from Vegas to east coast?

When leaving LA, you will want to be well on your way before 2pm on Friday, and earlier is even better, or not until well after 8pm, and later is better.

You will not be walking around Vegas, unless in the middle of the night. You can walk during the day if you're ok with being in a full sweat after one block. Cab it everywhere. I hear the Cirque de Soleil shows are something else, and chicks dig that stuff. I hear the "O" (as in "eau" or water) show is particularly spectacular. Some hydraulic platform can allow dancers to be gliding over the shallow water, and then moments later people are diving head first disappearing through the "floor".

I might recommend forgetting SD altogether. You can't "do" LA in half a day. If only because getting around is a biznatch. If you forget SD, only rent the car for the concert portion, return it immediately after, and just cab it everywhere while in LA. Then you can easily take your girl to any posh restaurant, or hole in the wall bar, etc. LA is pretty spread out, depending on what you want to do. Easy come, easy go, as some places can be an impossibility to park in, particularly in popular weekend night areas, I think anyways.

Anyways, it's easiest to drop SD (it's not Vegas nor near concert). Assuming one full day is killed on concert, you are given three full days for LA and Vegas combined. Actually, since one full day is for the GC, make that only two full days. That may be too relaxed for you, but LA/Vegas/SD with only two full days is just kind of nuts if you ask me. Yeah, I'm speaking in terms of days, and not hours, because I just want to reiterate that point . . .

What race track were you thinking of? I'm sure there must be a good handful of tracks between all the places you will visit.

OK, I reread your post. You might be able to pull it off. I recommend leaving both LA and SD late as possible while still being able to catch a flight. Like say a midnight flight for Vegas. Arrive maybe 1am, and you then hit the ground running. Vegas is alive at night in the summer. You need to plan your sleep though, if planning on hiking the GC.

Alright, your first post, when you say leaving Vegas at night, what time do you mean? Whatever you mean, make sure there are actually flights at those times. However, I'm sure it must be different with Vegas . . . but better see . . .

The flight to LAX is already booked. We land at 8am I believe. The flight back to NJ from LV departs LV at 9pm and arrives home at 5am. I have 4 full days off from work after that. Not sure on the exact times since the woman booked the flights, but those are roughly them.

Honestly neither of us is at all concerned about doing anything in LA. LAX is just the landing spot she prematurely chose and booked.

We talked last night. Looks like landing in LA, hanging around downtown till the late night (9pm or later), then driving to San Bernardino to sleep is the plan. After the concert (10-11pm), drive straight to SD and sleep. Wake up, leave SD at night, drop car at LAX and hop plane to LV.

I want to do something fast paced with little sightseeing and idling. I'm not one for hanging out.

Las Vegas Motor Speedway isn't having the exotic driving event any day we're out there except for Saturday, which is the concert. So, no high speed nuttery for me. :(

We might do Cirque actually. :)

I'd definitely recommend seeing "O" in Vegas. It's an incredible show. If you can't get tickets, "La Reve" is a knock-off that is pretty good also. The Blue Man Group is another awesome show.

DO NOT buy tickets for a Vegas show ahead of time!!! There are places up and down the strip that sell the left over seats the day of the show and you can get GREAT deals. That's what we did last time and not only were the tickets cheaper, but we got seats closer to the front. We were in the 2nd row for Blue Man Group. You're taking a bit of a gamble, but it's a much better deal when it works out. Just hit one of those stores in the morning and see your show that night.

Also, forget riding in cabs in Vegas. Just pay for the daily use bus pass, it's like $10 bucks or something and then you can just ride the bus as much as you want for one price.

I never saw it, but is the movie titled Crank a biographical account of your life? :p

Sorry. I'm sure there are tracks around LA or SD, there's gotta be. I'd hit car forums, and you'd get answers pretty quickly.

I've never been. Enjoy!

If you don't like sightseeing, what is it that you like to do, outside of concerts and race driving?

We have some great restaurants in CA. I hear there is a really sick Thai place in Pasadena, but never been. I like this Mexican restaurant quite a bit, and highly recommend the carnitas. I discovered this place because a few famous flamenco and classical guitarists I know like to eat and hang out there time to time. Pretty close to LAX.

http://www.laresrestaurant.com/

In SD, I really dig this place right on the beach. The octopus cocktail is pretty delish, and so are the fish tacos. Really good. Wait times can be a pain though. You have to hover around, ask the guests to save the table for you when they leave or something.

As for beaches, I guess you don't like "sightseeing" but the South Bay area is full of people who are sun and beach worshippers, like Hermosa and Redondo. Manhattan is self made successful driven yuppie town I think.

I'm not as good a martial artist as Jason Statham, but I do kung fu. It's a pretty accurate depiction of how I like to live though. :D

I'm big on Thai, I try Thai restaurants everywhere I go and I get the same dish. I will defly try to check out that one or another one somewhere out there.

That Mexican place sounds like my kinda digs. I know the woman would want to go there. We spent a week in Mexico City 2 years ago. Most people go to Cancun or somewhere similar. We stood in a small hotel in the barrio surrounded by chop shops and street taco vendors. We went to a lucha libre at the arena. That trip was great. :D

If I were to worship anything, it would be the sun. :)

I have a strong distaste for Manhattan. :p
