ok my room is 2200 cuft. I want a sub. or pair of subs and am looking to spend around $1200. My top choice so far is the epik empire or maybe a pair of epik legends when they come out. the only reason im leaning to the empire over the legends is that if its not enough i can always add another.(dont have room for three legends). So my question is how are these subs? The local high end store is trying to sell me either a sunfire 1000w 12" or a velodyne 15" they also sell jl audio. How does epik compare with these two brands???

EPIK is pretty well respected. I don't know much about them though, since I am in Canada and can't buy one even if I wanted to. For $1200 I'd look at an SVS PB12-plus. Every one who owns one raves about it.

Unless your local audio dealer is really willing to cut his price you will do much better with an EPIK, SVS, HSU etc. You'll have to spend at least twice as much on a Velo to get the same performance. Obviously he is going to try and sell you one of his subs, that's how he makes his money.

I currently have two Hsu VTF-3 MK3's in a 3900 cuft room and it's more bass than I can handle. Hsu regularly has sales throughout the year....I got mine for $549 +shipping.

The epik would be a good choice imo as well.

One of these subs would be great for an audiophile with great musical expectations

Theres always used, and you could look at HSU and see if they have any deals going on... off hand a pair of their ht3 would probably rock.
