iPod only plays thru one speaker

Hi there, I am a first time poster, and I am having a strange problem with my Yamaha RX-V730 amplifier. I am plugging my ipod into the VAUX port with a cable that plugs into the headphone port on the ipod, and the other end is a RCA (red and white plugs) connector. But only 1 speaker plays. I have tried other inputs, eg CD, DVD and get the same thing. My CD player and every other input works fine. At first I thought it was the ipod, but then I tried a second ipod and got the same result. At that point I thought maybe I had a faulty cable, but a second cable made no difference. I am wondering if anybody else has experienced anything like this and whether it might be a setting or something on the amplifier? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Have you tried switching the speaker cables to see if it's only 1 side?

EDIT- nvm, i see you said the CD player works. Have you tried reversing the red and white rca jacks?
 
Almost sounds like a mono plug on that cable. Replace the cable.
 
I thought it was the cable too, but he said he changed the cable.

Is the Y cord a long one or a short one? Some of them look like stereo but aren't.
 
hey guys, thanks for your replys. But yes, I have changed cables, and even tried different ipods. I have the dvd and cd player plugged in as well and they are working fine, and i have tried plugging the ipod into the inputs that these devices are currently working fine in, and still only on one speaker. If I swap the speakers cables around then it goes to the other speaker. Is it basically that a mono signal is been sent to the amp perhaps? I'm a bit stumped to be honest.
 
and i should also mention that when listening to the ipod with headphones it works on both chanels...
 
can you take a pic of the cable youre using so we can be sure it is stereo and not mono?
 
You've verified that the iPod is putting out stereo (headphones)
You've verified that the stereo from the RCA on works (switched cables).

The only possability is that the cable is not taking stereo from the 1/8" and putting it out the two RCA jacks.

This could have been a defective cable: but you've said you changed it with another. So it's stuck being cable design.

Maybe it doesn't like that particular jack in that particular Ipod.
 
When you said you switched cables, did you switch with the same brand and model cable?
Maybe that production run of cables was bad. Try a different type, just a thought.
 
Thanks for your replies. But yeah, nothing seems to work. I am wondering is there other alternative cables I could try, like something that plugs into the optical inputs or something.
 
you could get one that plugs into the line out of the ipod where the charger normally goes, it will sound better that way as well, seeing as if you crank the volume too high from the headphone out it clips. i saw one on a website that was advertised on AH before, but i seem to forget where it was now. maybe another member here can help me remember it.

The LOD wouldnt work because theres no 3.5mm input on the receiver. He would still need to get a cable with a 3.5mm input and rca output. I don't have time right now to look up the items, but everything you should need is on monoprice.com
 
Confirm with JerryLove on all that. It is stereo output.
