This mystery is driving me mad..

If anyone can help me, I would sure appreciated it.
I have a Yamaha HTR 5930 so just a basic receiver and a pair of bookshelf Wharfdale speakers connected to it. Now, the problem is that only the right hand speaker works properly. The left one sounds exactly as if it a polarity problem: low, distorted, and echoing. I have made sure it's not a polarity problem (switching the cables around). The speakers and solid cables are new. So the problems must be the receiver. I have changed the balance on the speakers and tried different audio inputs. The test signal sounds great.
For me its a mystery, hopefully someone out there can lead me to the right directions.

Cheers
Martin

Have you tried different audio outputs? Switch the left and right speakers and see if it still is only one side.

swap speakers and see if the problem folllows the speaker or stays in the same channel. Use a couple of inputs to make sure that is not your problem source

The above step is vital, to tell whether it is the speaker or receiver. Most likely it is the receiver and something has happened to cause a huge phase shift on that channel.
