HT Advice.Pre/Amp, LCR Inwall,InCeiling,InWall Sub????

Looking for a surround pre/amp combo for a home theater setup. It will be used about 80% for movies & 20% for music. I have a budget of $14K for 3 LCR InWalls, 4 side&rear InCeiling & 2 InWall subs with 1 amp & the surround pre/amp combo(needs to have XLR & 2 HDMI outputs). The room is about 20'x21'. Please fire away your recommandations...Thanks!

What's the ceiling height? Can we talk you out of in-wall subs? They don't perform as well as in-room subs. If so, a dual Epik Empire setup is a great option.

For speaks, I'd look at Triad, RBH, SpeakerCraft, Def Tech, Atlantic Tech, Polk LCs, Sonance, Paradigm to name a few.

For consumer purchase, in-wall subs, I'd look at Velodyne, RBH, SpeakerCraft, Def Tech. The general consumer purchase, in-wall subs will only dig down to the low 30 Hz range when we'd really like to get down to <=20 Hz.

How will the center channel be configured? If it's horizontal in the standard stud bay, the speaker options are going to be limited. SpeakerCraft, Niles, Atlantic Tech, Polk LCs come to mind.

I second that! I get greatly improved bass from my in-ceiling subs over my old in-room sub. It all depends on the quality of the driver and how well the enclosure is constructed and installed.

How can you like under-floor subs, but not in-walls? Perhaps you think the choice of drivers is limited by the depth of a typical wall? That may be true, but we don't know what kind of walls he has yet. There may be a storage room behind a suitable wall that could be utilized.

In other words, let's not dismiss any options until we know they aren't suitable.

First question - can you do woodwork? Just basic woodwork would suffice. You have a healthy budget for your system, but that doesn't mean you have to spend more when you don't need to.

If you can do woodwork, I'm sure Annunaki would help you design an in-wall sub, if you ask nicely. He's designed and built several, and I wouldn't have been able to build my in-ceiling subs without his guidance. Just looking at the published specs for the SI-10, I'm not impressed - especially considering the fact that your system will be mainly for movies. You can expect deeper bass extension from movie soundtracks than from music, so you should try to get/build a sub with the deepest extension possible (and practical).

For sub amplification, you will get much greater bang for your buck by going with a pro-amp, such as a Behringer or Yamaha. No matter which route you go with for the sub driver/enclosure, I would definitely go with a pro-amp for power. The sub won't care who made it...

I like the 80.1. (though you have to be aware of late night function to disable TrueHD autoflagged DRC every single time, if bitstreamed, and if you care). Otherwise, there isn't any competition for me at this price. The other stuff, no comment, except for the XLRs, go to Monoprice, very affordable.

The best bang for buck with zero footprint could be an infinite baffle sub. A very bad bang for buck could be these cool JL in wall subs.

That's a rather steep roll-off from 26-22hz (I think).

Frequency Response (anechoic):
26 Hz - 101 Hz (+/- 1.5 dB)
-3dB at 25 Hz / 112 Hz
-10dB at 22 Hz / 150 Hz

That's a rather steep roll-off from 26-22hz (I think).

Can't view the pdf at the moment, but that appears to be an electronic bandpass filter in the amplifier, with subsonic filtering below 26hz to prevent overexcursion/damage to the driver.
There is normally significant gain at those frequencies when the driver is mounted in a real room.
