sub monaural connection

Hey guys,

I recently bought a SONY STR-DN1000and a bunch of speakers to go with it; now I am looking into a sub. The problem is that the receiver only offers a monaural connection.

Does the connection require that I use a passive sub?

Can a sub hooked up to this receiver only be used with an amplifier?

For the most part, all subs are mono. A passive sub would be one without an amp and a sub preamp output, whether mono or stereo, is for an active (powered) sub.

Is it common for receivers to offer only a mono sub connection?

Yes, it is normal. Even for those with two outputs they are both mono. For a sub with R+L inputs, they are summed to mono inside the amp anyway.

Oh gotcha, it makes much more sense when put that way- thanks. I just wish I would have been less impulsive when buying a receiver. I wasn't ready for the mono connection.
