As the New York Times reports:
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced that she was changing the federal leadership of the oil spill operations. Adm. Thad W. Allen, the commandant of the Coast Guard, is now directly overseeing the work of Rear Adm. Mary E. Landry, who had been in charge of the response. Admiral Allen was in charge of the federal response to Hurricane Katrina.
The same guy who oversaw the brilliant government response to Katrina is overseeing its response to the Gulf oil spill?
Well, that’s confidence-inspiring … I cannot believe we are going down the SAME road again....WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!

Do you know what Adm. Allen's role in Katrina was and when he assumed oversight?
On September 5, 2005, while serving as Coast Guard Chief of Staff, Allen was appointed deputy to Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Michael D. Brown by Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, and placed in charge of Hurricane Katrina search-and-rescue and recovery efforts. Former colleagues interviewed after the announcement praised Allen as well-suited to the task.

On September 9, 2005, Allen was given full command of the Bush administration's Hurricane Katrina onsite relief efforts. Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff elevated Allen following the removal of Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Michael D. Brown from that position. Allen announced on January 25 that he would be relieved of this responsibility on January 27, 2006.

Exactly. He was well qualified then and since which was the point of my rhetorical question earlier. From all I've read, he did a rather good job considering the role he was abruptly thrust in to and also acted proactively during the aftermath of 9/11. Jamie, that was a pretty knee jerk and poorly researched post of yours.

The gulf states are mostly red states who don't like Federal involvement in anything. They're getting what they want :p

So, the federal government is going to spend millions of dollars fixing BPs screwup? This wasn't a 'natural' disaster, it was a corporate ef up. Really, the bigger issue is the need for the government to go in and correct this at all.

Seriously, why isn't there already a cap in place on the oil lines to halt the crud from spewing into the ocean?

Answer: Because they were not prepared for this at all!

BP deserves whatever hit they get because of this.

The Federal government should do everything in it's powers to expedite the repairs and cleanup, thereby preserving the natural resources and US territorial waters in the Gulf. Don't leave it up to a private company to decide what is appropriate measures to restore the environment.

After that.....

Sue and fine the living crap out of BP.

What was he specifically charged with doing Jamie at the time shortly after the hurricane hit, Jamie? Do you know? When you do, come back with another opinion.

no body asks for these assignments...they get them thrust upon them...
they are usually catastrophic and unique in nature, and huge in scope, unprecented at times...they are men, not gods...

they do the best they can, which is usually better than 99.999999% of the rest the population could do...
imagine a 2 AM phone call: we have a huge oil leak, 5000' deep, get moving...

everybody wants this to stop...it will cost BP >10 bil, not to mention the lost revenue, mils/day, the lease is 1 mil/day...

if I can second guess/Monday morning QB, perhaps they should have had contingency in place for the 'suction bells' they are now making...but hindsight is 20:20

Not that he dod a good job but as a reminder, the Federal government can't just go in and control crowds using any military or federal agency like FEMA, unless the state requests it. New Orleans and Louisiana didn't ask for at least three days.

While the BP oil geyser pumps millions of gallons of petroleum into the Gulf of Mexico, Barack Obama and members of Congress may have to answer for the millions in campaign contributions they’ve taken from the oil and gas giant over the years.
I'm sure Bush took money too...but it was supposed to be different this time with Obama....

Is it true Exxon never paid a dime of the fines on the Valdez disaster? I have heard that bandied about but don't know if it is true.

But now they can take them directly and legally. Let's see what is the oil spill worth and who wants some campaign money.

I say let free markets reign. You know they will never do nothing shady, cut corners, or put the screws to the unsuspecting. Need to get Big Gov out of the picture entirely.
