Help with Mordaunt Shorts!

Hi everyone,

I figured this question would best be answered here rather than in the receiver section as it might be answered by those with similar set-ups?

I have some Mordaunt Short 902i's, 906is, and a 905i. Still browsing for a good sub but I was wondering what a good receiver/amp would be my best option for powering these speakers.

I am currently running a Denon 588 and I feel like they are not matched to their potential. I can't seem to get it off of the Analog function. Not sure if this has anything to do with it.

I was looking at an arcam avr 200. Too outdated? Any feedback would be very helpful. Would my Denon suffice?

It will probably be better if you have only one thread about this problem. That way, people don't miss one of them when they answer and you won't miss an answer when you look at the other thread.

The 588 isn't exactly a powerhouse and although I didn't mention it in my other reply, you may need to do a hard reset of the microprocessor.

Yeah I realize that now. I was looking for good suggestions for a receiver for these particular speakers and receiver advice for the one I have.

any suggestions for an upgrade?

Do you have pre-outs? If so, an external amp could do wonders for you.

Looking at the M-S specs they don't look like they should be hard to drive at all. My feeling is that adding a good properly sized subwoofer to handle everything below say 80hz would do wonders for curing that "something is missing" feeling. A sub will fill that hole and crossing over at 80hz will take some of the strain off that 75w receiver. I don't see anything about where you are from but I'd be looking at asking Internet direct companies like Elemental Designs, Epik, Hsu Research, and SVSounds to size a subwoofer to properly fill your room.

If you're ready to replace that receiver then I'd be looking at something with preouts to facilitate future upgrades. A refurbished Onkyo TX-SR707 ($450) would be about the entry point. If you have the budget then a refurbished TX-NR1007 should drive the heck out of them.

Those guys can take a surprising amount of power. I had the previous 902s and they liked being on my monoblocks, but they don't need a ton of power to do well. Mordaunt Short is a "sister" company to Marantz and I know they pair well since that is what I was previously using with my PM7200. Arcam should do very well also as long as you aren't looking for the latest capabilities (latest audio formats, HDMI, etc...). I am a fan of Arcam's stuff.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I do not believe this receiver has pre outs.
I will have a look at those Onkyo's though. I would prefer to run the speakers through a single unit.
