Some friends have bought those. I played with one for a while. As a reader, I think it is pretty cool, and it would also be great for watching movies on a long flight. The display is very nice looking, even HD video on youtube is pretty spectacular. None of the ones I used had 3G, so internet was through WiFi, which is fine for most people. I think 3G is 30 or 40 bucks a month with no contract, which, I think is about what my 3G Blackberry data service costs.

I know a lot of people say it is really expensive compared to a Netbook, but it is very elegant. It's thin, comfortible to use and hold, and the display is awesome. I've realized that while I'm comfortable with techie looking stuff, a lot of people aren't - and this thing is sexy. It's something a hot girl could use, not just a nerd. That counts for a lot.

That said, I don't really see the application for most people over being a toy. I mean, the iPhone I know business people use. But, this thing doesn't fit in your pocket, so unless a guy is carrying a briefcase, or a girl a large purse, it isn't /easy/. And in a business meeting, the applications are one at a time. So if your trying to check e-mail, take notes and browse the web for something people are talking about in your meeting, you can't tab through the applications like you can on a regular Mac.

I heard it can be used as a universal remote, anyone hear about that or how that would work? It would be a pretty freakin' nice universal remote.

Seriously, I have no life.
"I have a 72" LED, so I'm not really polluting. It took two guys from Best Buy to hang it. And they got the wrong mount!"

"You don't ever have to worry about getting a paper cut".

"You don't have to worry about some rain forest in the Amazon being cut down".

That's great. I'm sure the pulp mills will now go under because the lumber from the Amazon, which isn't even used for paper, won't be needed.

DOY!

It would only control something that's connected to the network. I haven't heard that the iPad has an IR emitter.

Theres an attachment for the ipod touch and iphone to act as a universal remote, so it's a possibility that someone would make it for the ipad. I think it would be really awesome. Its actually the first thing i thought of when i picked it up, was that it would be a really sweet universal remote.

Kinda big, isn't it? Obviously, it would have enough room for any buttons and commands wanted but people often like to feel their way around the remote, so they don't need to look at it.

If they want an instant audience as a remote, the best thing they can do is use Bluetooth or WiFi to send commands to a base station that's capable of sending them to the equipment using a IR emitter, the IR input jack, RS232 and IP (since so many new receivers, media servers and BD players use this)

Compared to say a Crestron wireless panel it has a nicer display, better feel, better battery life and so on.

I agree about how they'd probably do it. Might be a third party sort of thing.

Already there is a Sonus application that acts as a remote control for that.

And if the total cost for the iPad and accessories is $1000, you can buy about 15 of them for the price of the big Crestron touchscreen, right?

I really would like to have been more up to speed on IP when I went to Crestron training and that the keypad and controller I trained with had worked. It would have been a much more useful class. OTOH, I can still log onto their site, which is a good thing.

Haha, they gave you a dud controller for training?

I don't mean to hate on Crestron, but, I just think their stuff is such a ripoff for how cumbersome and low-tech it is.

When I saw the iPad I was like "This is what the Crestron controllers should look and feel like"
