Speaker level inputs, waste of amp power?

From the sound of things, it appears you need proper bass management. You may want to consider an AV receiver of some sort with built in bass management. That's about the cheapest way to get what you need, and will keep you from ripping apart your speakers by asking them to do deep bass beyond their capabilites. From your description, you're already pushing them past their limits.

If what you're using now has pre-outs/processor loop, you could get an active crossover. Not sure how elaborate you plan to get with this.

My suggestion.

no i inteded on using the subs x-over so i can get the same clean sound i get from my floors with my bookshelfs.

the reason for doing that is so i can get undistorted sound, all my speakers are from the same line, the floors and bokshelfs used in my main system have very large bass woofers and midranges along with the tweeters, the small bookshelfs im using in my 2ch system are 2-ways with very small woofers (5") and all that bass turns into distortion instead of getting that crisp sound from my floors i like so much, i get muffled bass mixed in with the mids/highs.
You're on the right track by looking for a powered sub with an adjustable crossover.

In addition to that, since you say your speakers fart out with deep bass, you need to filter out the bass from them. Restrict your search to subs that apply a high pass filter to the speaker outputs and connect your mains to them. It may be fixed but it'll be better than nothing. Adjust the crossover/level controls to suit your tastes as best you can.

If you want/expect precision, you'll have to commit more $$ to this project than simply slapping a powered sub onto a generic amp can do for you. You'll need to commit to a total work-over with an active crossover and implement true bi-amping.

enjoy...

yea, i have all the bass managment in my main system, which is a full range system with all the speakers aside from the center using 3-ways, i really love the sound i can get from a three way, everything is just so crisp clear and accurate sounding, of course the same thing can be acheived using 2-ways and a sub, but i never planned on getting a sub for my main system and i dont NEED one, im sure it would sound even better with one because it would allow the woofers to be able to concentrate on mid/high bass. i think ill just forget about wasting money on my 2.0 system right now because i doubt i can acheive the same prescision as the main system and ill have nothing but a dissapointment compared to it. every thing i have listened to since i set it up now sounds like crap from all other sources, (computer speakers, heaphones, TV) because of it. i guess your ears get seasoned to good sound haha, i couldnt even make out the differences in note on obscura's cosmogenesis on my computer speakers like i used to because of the sound im used to, not to mention its nice to be able to hear the bass guitar as a seperate instrument and not melted with the main guitars. :D -stops rambling-

i just use the tape loop (watch out some receivers won't output pcm on the tape loop because they think you will steal your own receiver) if you use speaker cables, it is necessary to use some decent ones.

Why do you keep bringing up your "main" system?

Unless you intend to use this fargin subwoofer on that system, then it's a moot point.

I'm seriously beginning to wonder what your intentions are here. Do you want possible solutions for your "other" system, or do you simply want conversation?
