Hello All,

I mentioned to a friend that I'm about to start looking for a sub in the $800 - $1,000 range & he strongly urged I build one myself. (Of course he hasn't built one, and doesn't know anyone that has...).

I'm nervous about dropping the money on something I have to build myself, though I have a competent friend I know will help.

So I thought I'd ask for some suggestions!

My house is semi-attached, I like my neighbors and don't want to annoy them (too much), so I'm not looking to shake the foundation, or anything. My Living Room is about 15x20 with 10ft ceilings. 2 open doorways lead into the dining room, with a staircase leading upstairs.

Right now I have 2 Paradigm Mini Monitors as fronts (just beginning to build my HT), and I'll probably be upgrading them to Studio 10s or 20s.

This is for 50% music, 50% HT.

Would this be easier if I started sub shopping and got an idea of the brand name sub/model I like best, then try to match it to that?

Thanks!

There is a DIY section just for this sort of thing. You could consider buying an already designed kit where all you need to do is build the cabinet from plans or you can buy complete kits like those from www.partsexpress.com and others. For $1K IMO, you will be able to build a pretty good sub.

There are also some good kits at www.rythmikaudio.com

If you build your own, $800 - $1,000 will rock your house. You may be able to save some coin going the DIY route. The PE kits are great for a starter.

i was going to build my own, and then Epik came out with the empire.. for 799

to me this was a better value than what it was going to cost for all the parts to build my own comparable sub..

just something to think about

This would be a killer sub IMO, especially with the EP2500 in bridged mode. Otherwise you could up your displacement and go with an 18 Mal-X instead. Either way - awesome subs. Definitely go DIY if you can manage.
