Old Question, New Twist

Hey, guys.

I'd been planning on getting a PB13-Ultra, but the funds just aren't there. Now I'm looking at $800 for a new subwoofer.

The question of PB12-NSD vs VTF-3 MK3 has been asked a lot, but all the comparisons I can find seem to be involving an older PB12 from before SVS upgraded the woofer (which seems to have been a significant improvement).

Based on the Ilkka tests that everyone seems to reference, the newest PB12-NSD seems to compete VERY favorably with the VTF-3 (whereas the older version did not). The Craigsub rankings also seem to reflect a score from the earlier SVS woofer so they don't seem relevant.

Does anyone have any experience with the newer PB12-NSD vs the Hsu VTF-3 MK3? A clear winner? Are either a decent upgrade from my VTF-2 MK3?

Thanks for all you guys' help!

I find HSU subs a hair more articulate than SVS subs in general. Don't forget to consider an Epik Empire :)

IMO, the Epik would be an upgrade for sure.

I think that since the Mk3 is already a 12", all you are going to gain may be some output compared to the two in question. If the VTF-2 is struggling, then yes, they would probably be upgrades, but I'd probalby be looking to step up a bit more so you don't spend $800 for a marginal upgrade. Have you considered just adding another VTF-2?

I'd considered another VTF-2, but there's simply nowhere to put it. ... at all.

I must admit, I'm intrigued by the Epik Empire, but I can't find any quantitative reviews of any sort. There seems to be a frenzy for them, but short of "I think mine's amazing" I can't find any information from any sort from a third-party. Even Epik's info is pretty scarce.

Anyone have any quantitative data they can share?

I'm inclined to agree with J. Garcia.
I know it is not as fun, but just wait until:
1) You have the money for the Ultra
2) You either get a chance to hear or find a good review of the Epik.

The sub you have is plenty competent and would be a shame to spend that much money and perhaps not even be certain you ended up with better sound.

Search this forum, there are some impressive Epik measurements. Or search AE for their drivers and cabinets, add a ep2500 and an EQ and your in the $800 range :D
