In-ceiling sub build with Dayton RSS265-HF

Here is another build project I have been working on. This one is for a customer of mine. They have children and did not want a sub (or speakers) anywhere within the kid's reach.

I will be doing 5 in-ceiling speakers, 3 with directed sound-field options for the front.

The enclosure is tuned to 20hz and allows a vent velocity of just 14m/s with 300 watts of input power (will be powered with the BASH 300). I used a combination of ribs with window bracing this time through.

Here is my build progress so far. More pics to follow as the project moves along. I am waiting for the sub to arrive currently.

Gluing up some final ribs:

Binding posts added:

Internal shot of binding posts:

Since this will be in a ceiling, and internal enclosure rattles cannot be tolerated, the internal wiring is zip tied to the bracing and then held in place with a generous amount of PL adhesive:

Internal shot, with some rockwool added:

Bottom ready to be attached with additional rockwool attached:

Finished!

Looks good! What is the spacing between the ceiling joists? The enclosure looks kinda wide. I secured the internal wiring in mine really well also.

Actually this is setting below the ceiling joists. It is going into an enclosed area in the ceiling near some vent work for HVAC. I will have pictures at some point so you can see what I mean.

Look great!
I'm interested to see how you'll hang / mount this.

Will it be solidly mounted, or will you suspend it somehow? If I can correctly picture what you mean, I think I would try to hang it, instead of solidly mounting it, to reduce/eliminate the possiblity of vibration in the ceiling. I would just leave a very small gap between the edge of the baffle and the ceiling opening, then install some trim around the opening.

Well! Just listen to me! I haven't even finished my first DIY subwoofer yet and I'm telling you how to do your job! Just ignore me...

Thats a sweet build Rob. I was always curious to how in ceiling subs would sound. Certainly let us know as I would love to go this route is it sounds great as I have a drop ceiling in my basement.

I'm glad it's you and not me putting that into place, hope you have a pulley system or something. :D

That was my plan! I wanted to isolate it as much as possible from the floor joists and the ceiling to prevent rattles. Using my buddy's in-wall sub for a reference point, it will not be vibrating much anyway.

I will definitely keep everyone updated on the progress here Aaron. The one issue I have some slight concerns about is the option of placement being limited. They wanted in-ceiling though it it was the best option with the fewest compromises.

It will be about 2/3 (approximately at the 14ft. point of a 20ft. room) of the way from the front of the room to the back and about 1.5ft. from the left outer wall.

Great minds think alike, eh? Actually, it's more like I have a great teacher.;)

Yeah, if it's going to be near any HVAC ductwork, you definitely don't want any transmission of vibration to that!

Hmmm, it looks to be about 20" x 60" x 6" (maybe 8"?). Must be pushing 100lbs with driver. If you're gonna muscle that into place and secure it, good on ya! I will be employing some mechanical advantage...

Very good guess on dimensions! 56.5" x 19" x 8" actual external.

It was a tad difficult to get into place. I had my wife help me out but we got it in. It is completely isolated and is "floating" on an isolated layer of closed cell foam rubber.

I am quite disappointed as I forgot my camera and the guys doing the finishing work had it all closed up before I could get back.:(

I will try to do a sketch of what it looked like. I will get some photos though of it finished.

Resurrecting from the archive....

I did finally finish this project (finally) after the homeowner decided to get it completed a year later. I have custom grille design for it as well but the homeowner opted not to do a grille :)confused:)

Here is a pic of the sub in it's final place in the ceiling:

no, unfortunately not. It did sound rather nice while it was running however.

I wish I would have though because the owners have now sold their house!
