What do those panels do exactly? Absorb? prevent reflections and echo? Are they worth the cost?
They have slightly different jobs depending on exactly what type of panel you order, but what they basically do is even out the frequency response in the room. The goal is that you hear the source material as accurately as possible.

Oh, and they make your room look cooler to everyone but your wife. :)

This thread came up when I was learning about room treatments and Sholling's panel setup looked so good it convinced me to treat my room. I started with the same 5 panels and 2 diamonds as he did then added 5 more for the front wall. Shipping to Canada was astronomic but well worth it.

I also attached noise reducing blackout curtains to my curtains to cut down on the window reflections and I already use a Subdude. I might add some more diamonds to the front wall and adjust the spacing of the rear wall panels to resemble Sholling's more elegant layout but for now this is the finished product in a 9.1 home theater in a 1 bedroom apartment.

Very nice! I'm a huge fan of energy speakers as well.

You are going to need a bigger sub ...

I heard that foam plug in ports on speakers, which are not made for that = bad idea

Those are probably factory supplied port plugs...I've got my RC-LCR plugged and I'm pretty sure my RC-10s are plugged too :)

I agree that he would benefit from a more capable sub though.

Dang that looks good!
Yours still looks better

I kinda messed up the back wall panels, they should be spaced a little further apart to look like yours but remounting them is out of the question so I'm going to get some LED strips from Ikea and see if playing with lighting helps improve the look. I wanted as many panels as possible on that back wall for maximum absorption with so many speakers pointing at that wall but it comes at the cost of appearance.
