Slight Speaker Distortion

Hello All -

I recently purchased a Yamaha RX-v765 & Paradigm Mini Monitors (for 2 channel music & HT). I definitely pushed them a few times to see what they were capable of (and I was very pleased).

Now I'm noticing a slight distortion, a soft crackle (wife can't hear it - its taken me a few days to convince myself I'm not crazy and this is actually going on) usually with drum sounds or low bass, at mid-range to louder levels. Have I blown the speaker? Or do I just need a sub to take some of the workload? (next purchase once I have the $$)?

Thanks in advance for comments & suggestions...

No, you haven't blown them. If they were blown you would smell the speaker cone, and probably you couldn't hear anything anymore. It smells pretty bad! And yeah... depends on your amplifier, output and so on! You should try your speakers on different amplifier (source) and see if it does the same.

You probably have damaged the speaker but not blown it. Most likely you have begun the process of the voice coil unraveling. The other possibility is you have a slight cone voice coil separation.

I don't think you should be trying or low bass rom those things.

They are nice speakers but they do have their limits.

Looking at the Paradiigm web site, they seem to be speced down to 70 hz. Trying to get lower that that by forcing power into them could be asking too much from them.

Start looking at subs if you want that low bass sensation.

Is repairing the coil expensive? Its not something I want to mess with myself...

Repairing any type of speaker driver problem, other than rotted foam, generally involves re coning the speaker.

Your options are to have the manufacturer do it, a speaker repair service, or order the parts and supplies and do it yourself. Unless you are a handy dexterous reasonably skillful person,, I don't advise the latter option.

If you are certain which driver is buzzing, I would contact Paradigm and ask them about re coning fees or service exchange. Then remove the driver and send it in.

Thanks.

Is this a problem that will steadily get worse? Or, if I put up with it and not push them too hard will it remain the same?

They sound good they've completely changed the way I listen to music and I'm already thinking about upgrading (after I buy & a sub & center), moving them back to use as rears...

Generally these type of speaker problems get worse over time. If it were me I would have the offending driver reconed.
