I saw Shutter Island tonight and really liked it. Leonardo Di C did his usual excellent job as a Federal agent investigating a sinister hospital for the criminally insane. Many things on this island are not what they seem, however, and things get pretty intense and crazy as the story is revealed. As usual for flix like this, my wife was so tense that she said she wants to see it again now that she knows the story, so she can see how it really happened.

I too thought it was really intense and wanted to see it again so that I could see how the pieces fit. I loved the music -- very Hitchcockian! There was one twist that I could see coming a mile away, but other than that, excellent performances and a very good script. I look forward to checking it out again on Blu!

cheers,

usual excellent job
Thou LDC is slowly growing in my eyes he still have a lot of room for improvement in serious drama roles. Yes, I seen departed, Blood Diamonds etc... but nothing recent he did still beats one of his very early acting in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" - He was a simply perfect retard boy.

But in largely- his look is too boyish and his goatee and bad shave is just an attempt to macho up a bit :D

I have not seen shatter island yet, but I'd honestly give it a try as soon it's available from sources other than theaters or bad CAM

For the first half of this movie, I was cursing the bloopers. Then I prematurely figured out the ending and realized that a bunch of what I considered bloopers were actually clues, cleverly disguised as bloopers. I also loved the music tracks, including a couple Minimalist favorites, John Adams' "Christian Zeal and Activity and Ingram Marshall's "Fog Tropes", both of which fit perfectly into the atmosphere of the island. I have to see this again so I can fit together all the complex little things dropped in there.

Is it 'jump out at you scary' or more just tense?

Just tense. Building the tension higher and higher is what this movie is about. Does it well, except for the twist most people will see ahead of time.

cheers,

I thought it was good, but not Scorcese's best. I do agree it had a Hitchcock feel to it and you do need to watch it twice to pick more of it up.

My son said he didn't like it, but he doesn't seem to like anything these days. He said it was a bit depressing.

I liked it it was good but not great. I really like DiCaprio a lot more now that he has matured a little. He did a good job but I saw the ending coming a mile away.

My wife was complete blind-sided by the end. I spent the first half of the movie noting non-sequiturs and things that looked like bloopers until I figured out the ending and realized that these apparent mistakes were clues.

DiCaprio has always been an excellent actor; he just doesn't always pick the best roles. I feel one of his best is still Basketball Diaries.

I saw this last night, it was okay, some stuff was a bit random and I had a hard time putting a few scenes together. Anyone else find this? The bits made more sense later on.

He is a good actor, I really liked The Departed. Hell, I even liked The Beach. I think he walks the line of tough and weak pretty well. When he is hurting or sad in a movie, I believe it - versus most of these actors can do 'tough' but never 'weak.'

i just finished watching this.

MOST of the movie is a drugged out illusion. what to believe = nothing.
it could have been a good story. but they screwed it up. i see it as a cheap production to do nothing but get a movie on the screen = make BIG bucks.

Spoiler !!!

I saw the ending coming a mile away.
You mean the twist or the ending? My niece talked about this movie before so I knew about the twist and still enjoyed watching it unfold. However my niece was probably texting toward the end of the movie so she didn't quite catch which perspective was reality. The only blooper I caught was the mental woman taking a sip of water from a non existant glass. The last decision LDC made to have his brain scrambled wasn't something I saw coming. Maybe I'm just not very imaginative.

When I saw it the first time, I was picking up all these apparent bloopers, but once I knew the end, I realized that all is not what it seems. This is, after all, a place where people are crazy. I spent career period working with people who ended up in a hospital due to schizophrenia and much of how they described it was LIKE Shutter Island. Nothing makes sense and you wonder how the place could be so evil and weird until you realize that they are delusionary. That made the movie work quite well for me.
