DLP is absolutely not an option. There are some things that should not be sacrificed for size

DLP's are awesome if you are on axis for viewing, don't mind the unsexy big box and have decent light control.

On a somewhat related topic, is there any reason the 58" S1 would have a worse picture than the 50" S1?

Only if you sit too close from it.
In this case, the 50" will look a bit sharper because of the smaller pixels.
