Harman Kardon Sub-TS8, low output

Hello everyone, been awhile since I've been here but have a question. I have a HK TS-8 10" sub and just recently it decided to give little output. My bass level dropped dramatically and I called HK and they informed me it could be the capacitor. Does anyone know of this happening? If anyone does, I would be greatly appreciative. What di you mean give it a little output? Via the avr or the sub? And yes its time for a sub upgrade

Ok, sorry about not clarifying on that, it's the output of the sub. I went from rockin' at about 1/4 to barely anything at full throttle. I would love to upgrade but don't want to spend too much on a new one. I like keeping my stuff all the same brand but don't want to spend too much on a new one.

Also as a note is there a simple fix to repair this?

First, IMHO keeping your products branded is only going to limit your overall experience. If your still getting some output the list of possibilities for the problem isnt easy, unless you have the tools to test the amp and woofer. Turn off all other speakers and play just the sub and reply with what you hear (turn the sub down to 1/4 volume). For future reference a subs volume shoudnt have to be turned up more than 1/2 way.

Everything sounds muffled. It actually makes things sound worse when I turn it up. IDK. So how much would a decent sub cost me as I don't want to spend too much.

Fixing this sub....

Ok, so does anyone know anything about replacing a capacitor on a sub like this? I would like to just fix it and call it good for now but need a little insight.

You dont know if its the capacitor. It sounds mechanical. How much do you want to spend on a new unit?

New sub

Well, thats the thing...I don't know how much this one is worth or if it really is? I would like to get something for under $250 as things are tight and rounding up that much would be tough. So, what do I do? Confused and without bass!!

The Velodyne Impact Mini was available for $200 from several authorized retailers at one point, so if you look into one of those... I'd haggle with the dealer and try to get the price down.

Another Velo option is the VMS-8, which a Velo rep at AVS confirmed is the same (earlier version) as the MiniVee. There is a good price on it from Hi Def Lifestyle through Amazon...although it's a bit above your budget.

I am now using a VMS-8 for my PC audio setup, and I'm very pleased with it. Again, maybe not the performance I could've gotten by going DIY, especially in overall output... but it's a tight sounding, small sealed sub that works perfect for my application. As to the SQ, it handles double bass very well, which was a requirement for my musical preferences.

take it to an authorized service center Unless its under warranty its probably gonna be cheaper (performance relative to repair cost) to get a new sub that performs better. Id buy a new unit and give yourself an upgrade in your ht experience. Dayton sub120 and cadence subwoofers are other budget subs that rock. The velodyne discussed above will give the best overall sound but will not go as low as the dayton and cadence cx12.

EDIT: your sub is rated -6dbs @ 35hz

Better late than never but I just happened to find this thread today and thought it might be helpful in future searches. I have two of these subs and both have had multiple issues, always related to cold solder joints. I have found cold solder joints on the LFO input, one of the transistors, and one of the capacitors. Careful application with soldering iron and new solder fixed them. Wave soldering used in mass production has some issues, compounded by location in China
