An easy four star movie for me and one of my all time favorites to boot! This is a very well made movie that makes you very uncomfortable at times and on the edge of your seat through out. The PQ is good and the sound is A+!!
Amazing LFE in this one! If you have not seen it yet, what are you waiting for.
This movie should win best picture, but of course they won't let that happen

I really enjoyed THL too. One of the best I have seen in a long time.

I was so on the edge of my seat, that when James was in the supermarket with his partner and kid, I was expecting the freezer cabinet to explode. Everything about the movie had a ring of truth and a near documentary feel to it. As a character, I thought James was very believable. Having internalized and rationalized the danger of his job, he can function as long as he suppresses his emotions. Occasionally something gets through, like the soccer kid that is used as a "body bomb". This is really a great flick.

Actually this has a much better chance than Avatar. Its this or Inglorious Bastards from a few inside sources I have spoken with. Avatar will win most of the other stuff. But not picture and director.

This truly is one of the best pics of the year.

netflix says its 1.78. is that true ? i ask, because they said Pitch Black was 1.78. but it was scope. not that it really makes a difference, just askin.

I don't do Netflix, but I would assume that it's a 4 or 5 point scale. If The Hurt Locker is only a 1.78, that's entirely absurd unless somebody is rating it's suitability for little kids.

I believe he's talking about what screen aspect ratio it was shot in.;)

Saw it yesterday in 720p and DTS at home. PQ and sound were great, however storyline - i didn't get it - yes, it is dangerous in iraq - yes, people die there, but WTH EOD Starts sniping (and hits moving target over mile away??) instead of calling air support??? Or goes splits up (bad mistake) and runs after insurgents in their home neighborhood (even bigger mistake) ???
There are plenty other such moments which didn't made any sense to me.

Overall Avatar didn't receive as many awards as people thought was going to. Hurt locker had 6 in more important areas anyway. As soon as I knew no actors being nominated for Oscars from Avatar I was pretty certain best picture and director weren't going to happen for Avatar.

I felt bad for Kathryn Bigelow (director) when Mark Boal (producer/writer) was grabbing her arm. It was obvious she had severe stage fright, it seemed like he was holding her to make sure she didn't just run off the stage.

Gotta disagree with you there. Hurt Locker was ok, but nothing special. Just another war movie. The director did indeed do a good job of creating tension and helping to bring you into the world of an EOD tech. But I would even call that Kingdom movie with Jamie Foxx a better movie.

I wouldn't watch the movie again. Whereas I saw Avatar twice in the theater and can't wait to buy the BD and watch it again.

I heard multiple opinions/responses from actual EOD techs, which confirmed the fact - the movie has nothing to do with reality.
She did a great job of bringing you into some fantasy/alternative world, where EOD tech unnecessary risk their lives and breaking chain of command.

It is good cinema? Yes, but don't try to make any connections to real-life.
Hurt Locker is just another dumbed down, effects & drama hyper upped flick, but IT IS NOT a documentary by any means.

This one was way over hyped IMO. It was good, but I didn't feel it was Oscar caliber. The acting is good, the story is average and it didn't really tell us enough about the characters. You can see who they are, but it doesn't even attempt to talk about why they are that way that would give them a lot more depth. Being based on actual events though, this one seemed pretty straight forward to me.

They are being sued by the guy who says everything in the movie is based on him, as the writer was a journalist deployed with their EOD unit. He claims he coined the phrase "The Hurt Locker" as well. I didn't see anywhere in there that it said these were based on real events or any mention of the real person, which is pretty lame.

Glad to read some of the comments here. I thought this was an OK flick, but just OK. I didn't get the suspense that many talked about, and the story iteself was boring. Good characters; interesting style; but Oscar-worthy? Not to me.

The 2 ideas that this movie

1) has nothing to do with reality and
2) was totally based on this dude who's suing the filmmakers

are mutually incompatible. They can't both be true.

I totally support this as best picture. It was the best film I saw this year, at least. Many of the criticisms miss the mark for me. I never saw the film as a documentary of the war or a training film - it's primarily a character study of a specific (reckless, danger-seeking) man. Bigelow seems to specialize in films about the psychology of thrill-seeking behavior.

SPOILER!:
Example: I've heard criticisms when the Renner character goes into the city during the night, all alone, looking for the killers of the young boy. That this was reckless, and no one would do that... Well, yeah. The entire point is that he's cracking under the pressure and acting stupidly and recklessly - and he's also deluded and misinformed (the boy is fine, the people he targets are innocent). It's very much the point that he was doing an insane thing.
