I ran across an ad for an Infinity HPS-1000 subwoofer that doesn't power on. It was sold circa 2000 for around $1000, with a 15" driver, two 15" passive radiators, 1000 watts advertised, and around 4 cubic feet. I got it for $30. The guy (he seemed reputable) said there was some small water leak that fell on it, the amp wouldn't power on after that, but that the driver should be fine.
My thinking was that I could watch for a used pro amp on Craigslist, and open up the Infinity and bypass the amp section. I often see decent-sized PA amps going for $200, or maybe a little less. Or, I could try and get a plate amp, but I think that would be a lot more expensive for a high-powered amp. I could look into repairing it, but I don't know if that can be done or would be cost-effective. I'll probably at least give Infinity or an electronics shop a call. Maybe I could take it into a local shop and see if they see anything obvious that went wrong.
Anyone have an idea of which approach (repair, buy pro amp, buy plate amp) would be best?
