So tell me again how the private sector has fixed it so far and how keeping things the way they are is going to fix it more?

Personally I don't think total socialized medicine is the answer, but something has to be done to cover people who can not afford to buy their own. Having the poor over loading our emergency rooms then stiffing the hospital is not going to work much longer, and we all end up paying for it anyway.

Nobody should have to lose their home or risk financial ruin just because they got sick or injured.

it's incredible in this so-called 'Christian, greatest, richest, most powerful, blah blah blah' country in the world that we allow 40k+ people to die from preventable healthcare issues every year because they don't have insurance.

disgusting.

Just as it's disgusting that we provide medical treatment to thousands upon thousands of illegal immigrants a year...paid for by the American taxpayer.. If we fixed the immigration problem in the US we would have a lot more money to help our own people, and 40k of people could be easily treated.

Where did the 40K number come from?

Perhaps you can enlighten the rest of us how the bills masquerading as health care bills are going to do anything to fix it? Ensuring that everyone has equally poor access to equally poor health care that is run by the gov't (which will take over 1/6th the US economy in an unprecedented & unconstitutional move) is going to make it better somehow?

I don't see anyone arguing that the system is perfect. But, why make it far worse to make a bunch of power hungry people with severely ulterior motives happy?

Do you know how these "health care" bills cover the uninsured? They don't... They just make it illegal to not buy insurance.

How about we let insurers compete across state lines? How about we eliminate all the must carry provisions that each state has?

Hey, I just got inspired. I know how we can solve poverty now! We'll pass a law and make it illegal to be poor. Surely that will work!

While we're at it, why don't we impose stiff fines on those that can not/will not buy or otherwise provide their own insurance? Oh, wait. I think that's already been proposed.

That's why I mentioned it in my post. ;)

I had high hopes for the bill in the beginning, it's nothing but a let down now. And I must comment on this - the private sector is getting worse, much worse. I use to have semi-decent coverage at my ****-hole job until 2010 now I get less than half as much coverage and I can't even GET as good of coverage as I use to have. Even if I max out for the highest cost plan (almost 10x what I have always payed) it isn't on par with last years plan. Health care just isn't a affordable option any more, if I got seriously ill (ie cancer) even with my coverage I'd probably be bankrupted. (goes to review the bankruptcy changes that went into effect a few years ago....)

Sorry to hear that. My coverage has not changed at all. Had this been a few years ago, I would have told you to bust you butt and get a new job....but those days are over (hopefully not for long). It still doesn't hurt to further your education and in the meantime. I do understand that these times are different. Its sad to see the news and the current administration sugar coating the real economic crisis.

Hang in there brother and fight the good fight.

The discourse varies from rhetoric to hyperbole to outright lies.

Go look up "socialism". It doesn't mean what you think it means.

Then go look up any of the plans. Not a single one takes over medical providers (which still wouldn't be socialism).

In fact, basically none go so far in reach as it would if we just extended medicare.

More than half of all bankruptsies are caused by medical bills in the US.
The medical insurance industry is bringing in record and near-record profits.
Most of the rest of the medical system *supports* not just UHC, but single-payor.
