Dropped off Oppo-83 for upgrade...

Just got back from Oppo's office up in Mountain View. Dropped off my Oppo for the 83SE upgrade. Hope to get it shipped back by Friday.

Will post update with how the new player sounds!

I looked on the site and I don't even see the upgrade offered anymore. It cost $199 on top of your 83, which is $100 less than buying one outright and it said it was a limited time offer I believe. I did the upgrade on mine and I definitely hear the difference.

Actually, it was a $299 upgrade for 83 owners who bought before last November (when the 83SE was released), which is $100 less than an 83SE.

I put the label on mine...looks like sh*t, but I did get the 10dbs of dynamic range . It doesn't work on the back John.

And...ummm...hmmmmm....

Okay, so I do not have my original, so I cannot to an AB comparison, but mostly I cannot hear a difference. Maybe slightly more definition but that is about it.

One caveat, I have "The Worlds Greatest Audiophile Vocal Recordings" by Chesky records. (I downloaded it as FLAC 24/96 from their site and burned it to DVD-Audio)

It was transitive! I actually dropped the drink I was holding in my hand, I was so swept away. There had never been that level of definition before.

So, I am still optimistic. SACD still sounds a little bright and gives me listening-fatigue after 30 mins or so (I have always had that problem with SACD, but as I have upgraded systems over the years, the issue has become less) But DVD-Audio sounds very good.

I also found with my setup, for SACD, 2-channel, DSD-PCM sounded best (as opposed to direct DSD)

Will update more as I have more to say.

If you want it for music, go with the SE. If mainly movies, then the standard is good enough IMO.

I want it for movies and music. I listen to CD and SACD, and on rare occasions to old vinyl on an old turntable.
